Acclaimed Platformer Poinpy Returns to iOS and Android as a Free Download

The critically acclaimed vertical platformer Poinpy has officially returned to mobile storefronts, launching as a free download on iOS and Android. The move comes after the title was removed from the Netflix gaming library last year, which had left the game inaccessible to the general public for several months.

Developed by Ojiro Fumoto and published by Devolver Digital, the game is now available without the requirement of a streaming subscription. In a departure from standard mobile industry trends, the new release contains no advertisements or microtransactions. Instead, the developer has included an optional tipping feature within the app, allowing players to provide financial support voluntarily.

Poinpy originally debuted in 2022 as a flagship title for Netflix Games, the streaming giant’s venture into the mobile software market. When the game was pulled from the service in June, it sparked discussions regarding digital preservation and the volatility of subscription-based gaming models. Its return as a standalone app ensures the title remains playable regardless of third-party licensing agreements.

The game serves as a spiritual successor and colorful inversion of Fumoto’s previous hit, Downwell. While his 2015 debut focused on descending into a dark, subterranean well, Poinpy tasks players with bouncing upward through vibrant, procedurally generated environments. The core gameplay loop requires players to collect specific fruits to create juice for a large, hungry creature pursuing them from below.

Mechanically, the title incorporates roguelite elements, where players unlock permanent upgrades and power-ups over successive runs. The game’s aesthetic is defined by the illustrations of artist Error403 and a soundtrack by Calum Bowen. By combining high-speed precision platforming with a physics-based movement system, it earned widespread praise upon its initial release for its tactile controls and rewarding progression system.

The re-emergence of Poinpy on the App Store and Google Play highlights a growing trend of “delisted” games finding second lives on independent platforms. While many mobile titles disappear permanently once their initial publishing contracts expire, Devolver Digital had previously indicated a desire to bring the game to a wider audience following its exclusivity period.
