Dominik Szoboszlai Signs New Five-Year Liverpool Contract to Stay at Anfield Until 2031
The Hungary captain has committed his future to Anfield until 2031, targeting domestic and European glory.

LIVERPOOL, England — Liverpool have secured the long-term future of midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, with the Hungary captain signing a new five-year contract that ties him to Anfield until 2031.
The agreement ends months of speculation surrounding the future of the 25-year-old midfielder. Negotiations between the player’s representatives and Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes accelerated rapidly in recent weeks before being finalized this week. Szoboszlai, who still had two years remaining on his previous agreement, has quickly established himself as a cornerstone of the club’s future.
“There’s always more to come. I’m never happy,” Szoboszlai said after putting pen to paper. “I want to set the example. I want to be an example also for everyone, as much as I can.”
Unfinished Business on Merseyside
Since arriving at Anfield from German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig for £60 million in the summer of 2023, Szoboszlai has developed into one of the most dynamic midfielders in European football. Last season, he enjoyed the most productive campaign of his career, registering 13 goals and providing 12 assists across all competitions.
Despite these impressive numbers, the Hungarian midfielder maintains that his ultimate ambitions remain unfulfilled.
“When I signed, I said I want to win everything,” Szoboszlai added. “That didn’t change for a little moment either. It stayed the same. I want to win everything that is possible in this country, also let’s say the Champions League. I’m ready to go for it.”
His rapid adaptation and high-intensity style of play have earned him significant plaudits from within the Liverpool dressing room. In February, teammate Mohamed Salah praised the midfielder’s profound impact, describing him as “one of the best players in the world.”
Leadership Role Beckons
With veteran defender Andy Robertson set to leave Anfield this summer, Liverpool are preparing to restructure their leadership group ahead of the upcoming campaign. A new vice-captain is expected to be appointed, and Szoboszlai has emerged as a leading candidate for the role.
Having captained the Hungarian national team from a young age, Szoboszlai is already well-accustomed to leadership responsibilities. His stature within the Liverpool squad has grown significantly, making him a natural choice to step into a formal leadership position.
The midfielder returned to Merseyside on Tuesday to begin his pre-season preparations. He is scheduled to travel with Andoni Iraola’s squad next week for a high-profile pre-season tour of the United States, where the club will finalize its preparations for the grueling season ahead.
