Liverpool Register Interest in FC Koln Forward Said El Mala Amid Transfer Competition
The 19-year-old German prospect is attracting Premier League interest after a breakout Bundesliga campaign.
Liverpool have registered their interest in signing FC Koln forward Said El Mala as they look to bolster their attacking options, according to reports. The 19-year-old German prospect has become one of the most talked-about young talents in this transfer window following an impressive breakthrough campaign in the Bundesliga.
Standing at 6ft 2in tall, the versatile attacker is primarily a right-footed left-winger but is highly comfortable operating on the right flank or providing cover centrally when required. Known for his explosive pace, technical soundness, and ability to navigate tight spaces, the youngster has shown a clinical edge in front of goal that has caught the attention of several top-tier European clubs.
During the last campaign with FC Koln, El Mala was utilized primarily as a rotational option. Despite making only 20 starts in his 34 league appearances, he managed an eye-catching return of 13 goals and four assists. This efficiency has made him a highly sought-after target, with Koln placing a valuation of around £43 million, including performance-related bonuses, on their prized asset.
A Collapsed Deal and Family Demands
The race for El Mala’s signature has already seen significant drama. Brentford had previously agreed on a deal in principle with the German club after matching their £43 million valuation. However, negotiations ultimately broke down when it came to personal terms.
The player’s mother, who also serves as his advisor, requested that Brentford sign El Mala’s brother alongside him. The West London club opted to reject the proposal, leading to the immediate collapse of the transfer.
Following the breakdown of the Brentford deal, El Mala is increasingly likely to stay at the RheinEnergie Stadion, where his current contract runs until 2029. This long-term commitment gives the Bundesliga side a strong negotiating position.
Liverpool’s Rebuilding Plans
Liverpool’s interest comes at a time of transition for the Merseyside club’s frontline. Following Mohamed Salah’s departure as a free agent, the club has been actively scanning the market for long-term reinforcements. While they have already completed the signing of Victor Muñoz from Osasuna, Anfield decision-makers remain keen on adding further depth and quality to their attacking ranks.
Though Liverpool have registered their interest in El Mala, they have not yet made any concrete progress toward securing a deal. The Reds are not alone in their admiration; fellow Premier League sides Brighton and Hove Albion and Newcastle United, along with German giants Borussia Dortmund, have also expressed interest in the forward.
With his physical attributes, technical skill, and direct style of play, El Mala possesses the necessary traits to flourish in the highly demanding Premier League. Whether Liverpool will translate their initial interest into a formal approach before the summer transfer window closes remains to be seen.
