U.S. Seeks Extradition of Cox Media Heir After Ibiza Arrest on Terrorism Support Charges

IBIZA, Spain — Spanish authorities have detained James “Fergie” Cox Chambers Jr., the billionaire heir to the Cox Enterprises media fortune, following an international arrest warrant issued by the United States. Chambers, a self-described communist and convert to Islam, faces allegations of money laundering and providing material support to Hamas.

The arrest took place Friday on the Mediterranean luxury island of Ibiza. A spokesperson for the Balearic Islands police confirmed that a U.S. citizen was taken into custody under an international warrant and is currently being held at the Centro Penitenciario de Ibiza. While Spanish officials did not initially name the individual, multiple sources confirmed the identity as Chambers, the 39-year-old estranged scion of one of America’s wealthiest families.

The move marks a significant escalation in a broader federal crackdown on the financing of radical political movements. The FBI and Justice Department have increasingly focused on what they describe as “nefarious” funding networks that support violent protests and anti-state activities. FBI Co-Deputy Director Chris Raia recently noted that the bureau’s Joint Mission Center has been actively building prosecutable cases against individuals tied to the financial underwriting of civil unrest.

Chambers is the great-grandson of James M. Cox, a two-time Governor of Ohio and the 1920 Democratic presidential nominee who founded the conglomerate now known as Cox Enterprises. Today, the family empire is valued at approximately $27 billion, with vast holdings in cable television, telecommunications, and automotive services. Chambers effectively severed ties with the family in 2023, reportedly walking away with a $250 million payout following a dispute over the company’s support for the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, a facility critics have dubbed “Cop City.”

Following his departure from the family business, Chambers redirected his substantial wealth into various radical causes. He became a primary benefactor for Palestine Action—later rebranded as Unity of Fields—and established the Berkshire Communists collective in Alford, Massachusetts. His activism often targeted Elbit Systems, an Israeli defense contractor, and supported legal funds for protesters involved in direct-action campaigns across the U.S. and the United Kingdom.

Federal investigators are reportedly examining whether these financial activities crossed the line into criminal territory. The probe into Chambers mirrors other high-profile investigations, such as the grand jury inquiry into Neville Roy Singham, an American tech mogul accused of financing Marxist organizations from Shanghai. The Justice Department is also currently prosecuting the Southern Poverty Law Center on charges including bank fraud and money laundering.

Chambers’ ideological shift has been punctuated by increasingly inflammatory rhetoric. He has publicly praised the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel as a “moment of hope and inspiration” and has stated that the “destruction of the US” is essential for human prosperity. After law enforcement scrutiny intensified at his Massachusetts commune, Chambers relocated to Tunis, Tunisia, where he adopted a lifestyle reflecting his conversion to Islam, often appearing in traditional attire such as the kaffiyeh and prayer cap.

Despite his radical leanings, Chambers’ lifestyle remained a paradox of high-wealth privilege and revolutionary aesthetics. Before his arrest in Ibiza, he had been seen vacationing among the global elite in Ireland and Spain. His social media presence often blended communist tattoos—including a sickle-and-barbells motif—with images of luxury travel.

Supporters of Chambers have characterized the arrest as a politically motivated attack by the Trump administration, labeling it “fascism” and an attempt to silence defenders of the Palestinian people. A protest is currently planned for Tuesday evening outside the prison in Ibiza where he is being held pending a judicial hearing via videoconference.

The FBI has declined to comment on the specifics of the case. Chambers and his legal representatives could not be reached for immediate statement. If extradited and convicted, the charges of providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization carry significant federal prison sentences under U.S. law.
