Wildfires Near Bordeaux Threaten French Defense and Space Facilities

Uncontrollable wildfires sweeping through southwestern France have reached the outer perimeter of vital defense, nuclear research, and aerospace manufacturing infrastructure surrounding Bordeaux, prompting military mobilization and emergency defense protocols.

At least seven facilities holding hazardous materials are located within 12 miles of active blazes. Among the most critical locations is Saint-Médard-en-Jalles, where workers produce solid propellants for France’s strategic ballistic missiles and Ariane space launchers. Nearby in Sainte-Hélène, chemical plants synthesize ammonium perchlorate, an essential oxidizer for rocket propulsion. Industrial operations near Bordeaux also supply essential components for Rafale fighter jets and military missile systems.

In response to the advancing flames, ArianeGroup evacuated staff from key facilities in the fire corridor. The Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission closed its military research center in Le Barp as blazes approached. Officials confirmed that no radioactive material is stored at the Le Barp facility, ruling out potential nuclear contamination risks.

France has deployed 1,500 military personnel to assist firefighting crews and fortify high-risk industrial installations. Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu noted that specialized containment measures were activated around chemical and explosive production sites given the nature of the products stored on-site.

The Gironde department represents the industrial core of France’s sovereign strategic deterrent and space program. Disruption to propellant manufacturing directly impacts national defense manufacturing supply chains and European space launch schedules.

The wildfire crisis in Gironde has scorched over 104,000 acres (42,000 hectares), destroying approximately 240 homes and forcing the emergency evacuation of nearly 4,000 holidaymakers from coastal resorts in Lacanau. Economy Minister Roland Lescure reported that more than 13,000 local businesses have experienced severe operational disruptions or mandatory closures. French President Emmanuel Macron described the blazes as the most severe disaster of its kind in modern history.

The situation forms part of a broader European environmental crisis driven by recurring summer heatwaves. Temperatures across the affected zone reached 91 degrees Fahrenheit (33 degrees Celsius)—roughly 13 degrees Fahrenheit above seasonal averages—according to regional climate monitoring data. Across Spain and France, cumulative fire damage has surpassed 100,000 hectares, forcing Spain to declare a national emergency, triggering route adjustments for major sporting events like the Tour de France, and displacing upwards of 360,000 residents across both nations.
