Manchester United have stepped up their efforts to reshape their squad with a formal approach for AS Roma’s highly-rated midfielder Manu Koné.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Premier League giants have initiated contact with the representatives of the French international as they look to add physical presence and defensive stability to their engine room. The move signals a clear intent by Michael Carrick to continue an ambitious overhaul of his midfield options ahead of the new campaign.

United’s transfer window started quietly, but activity at Old Trafford has accelerated rapidly. The club has already secured key reinforcements, reaching agreements to sign Brazilian youngster Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Belgian international Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. These acquisitions have been widely praised by pundits as astute business, yet the club’s leadership remains active in the market.

Strengthening the Core

The pursuit of Koné highlights a strategic focus on recruiting robust defensive midfielders. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano confirmed that United are actively scouting physical profiles to anchor their midfield.

“Man United are not done,” Romano stated. “Man United will sign, and wants to sign, one more midfielder. So Manchester United are looking at defensive midfielders, physical players. So we have to see which kind of options they will have on the shortlist. But for sure, Manchester United are still looking at midfielders, many, many names among the defensive midfielders.”

Romano revealed that informal discussions have already transitioned into direct inquiries regarding Koné’s availability. “I can tell you, for example, that Manchester United made a call to the agents of Manu Koné from Roma. He is one of the players they appreciate. There was a call over the recent days. Let’s see if it’s going to develop,” he added.

A Rising Star on the Global Stage

The 20-time English champions have long identified the defensive midfield role as crucial for tactical balance. Historically, elite holding midfielders have been the bedrock of successful Premier League campaigns, protecting the backline while instigating transition play. For Carrick, a former master of the position during his playing days at Old Trafford, finding the right profile is paramount.

Koné fits the modern mold of a dynamic, ball-winning midfielder. He recently distinguished himself as one of France’s standout performers during their World Cup campaign. His energy and tactical discipline earned widespread acclaim, making his omission from the starting lineup in Les Bleus’ disappointing 2-0 defeat to Spain in the semi-finals a highly debated decision among analysts.

Valuation and Contractual Hurdles

Securing the Frenchman’s services will not be straightforward. Koné is under contract with the Italian capital club until 2029, giving Roma significant leverage in negotiations. Under the ownership of the Friedkin Group and the tactical direction of their sporting department, the Serie A side is under no immediate pressure to sell.

To tempt Roma into a deal, Manchester United will likely need to present a substantial financial package. The Italian club is expected to demand a fee close to Koné’s current £42m Transfermarkt valuation, a figure that could rise given his impressive showings on the international stage.

As the transfer deadline approaches, United’s hierarchy is weighing their options, with Koné remaining a prominent name on a shortlist designed to return the club to the pinnacle of domestic and European football.
