ABU DHABI — The Abu Dhabi Media Office has announced the official approval of new, dedicated license plates for autonomous vehicles, marking a first for the emirate. The initiative is designed to regulate the operation of self-driving cars and ensure they are clearly identifiable on public roads, whether they are undergoing trials or operating as commercial services.

The roll-out of the new plates is led by Abu Dhabi Mobility, the brand identity of the Integrated Transport Centre operating under the Department of Municipalities and Transport. The initiative is supervised by the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council, aligning with Abu Dhabi’s ongoing expansion of pilot programs and active driverless transport services.

Distinctive Design Features

The new license plates are divided into distinct visual zones to ensure immediate recognition by other motorists and traffic authorities. Both the trial and commercial versions of the plates share a standard layout:

  • Left Section: A prominent blue square featuring the vertical text “Test” (تجارب) or “Auto Drive” (قيادة ذاتية) in both Arabic and English.
  • Center Section: The vertical designation “U.A.E A.D” (الإمارات – أبوظبي) set against a white background.
  • Right Section: The unique registration numbers of the vehicle.
  • Symbolic Logo: A stylized steering wheel icon surrounded by waves, symbolizing the active sensor arrays utilized in self-driving technology.

Beyond visual identification, these specialized license plates will assist municipal and traffic authorities in monitoring autonomous vehicles during active operation. By categorizing the vehicles, the system enhances real-time field supervision and supports overall road safety.

The licensing framework mandates that operating companies comply with strict technical and operational guidelines. This structured approach provides a clear regulatory pathway as the autonomous transport sector grows. The initiative allows municipal planners to collect and analyze operational data, which will inform future legislation and increase the emirate’s readiness for advanced smart mobility solutions.

Currently, Abu Dhabi offers public autonomous taxi services within designated zones, allowing residents and visitors to experience driverless transport firsthand.

Background: Abu Dhabi’s Smart Mobility Vision

The introduction of specialized vehicle registration is part of a broader push by the United Arab Emirates to position itself as a global hub for artificial intelligence and smart city initiatives.

Autonomous vehicles rely on a complex suite of onboard technologies to navigate urban environments without human intervention. These typically include LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), radar, and high-resolution cameras. The sensor waves depicted on the new Abu Dhabi plates represent these technologies, which constantly scan the vehicle’s surroundings to detect pedestrians, obstacles, and traffic signals.

By establishing a clear legal and visual framework for these vehicles, Abu Dhabi joins a select group of global cities implementing standardized systems to integrate autonomous transport into existing public transit networks.
