Sennheiser Debuts Flagship Earbuds With User-Replaceable Batteries Under EU Mandate Pressure

German audio maker targets hardware longevity with screwdriver-accessible cells ahead of regulatory deadlines.

Sennheiser unveiled its flagship Momentum True Wireless 5 earbuds, introducing user-replaceable power cells across both the earpieces and the charging case in a direct shift toward repairability ahead of stringent European regulatory deadlines.

European Union mandates now require consumer electronics manufacturers to ensure batteries are readily removable and replaceable, a rule that recently prompted hardware modifications across the industry, including Nintendo’s Switch 2 console. Sennheiser’s design lets owners swap the internal batteries using only a compact screwdriver, addressing the planned obsolescence that typically limits the lifespan of premium wireless audio devices.

The German audio brand redesigned the exterior chassis alongside the internal changes, reporting that 73% of test listeners rated the new form factor as more comfortable than the predecessor Momentum 4 model. The engineering shift expands on the battery architecture Sennheiser introduced in its Momentum Wireless 5 over-ear headphones. The accompanying Qi-enabled charging case was also scaled down to fit standard pockets.

Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity and Qualcomm’s aptX Adaptive codec enable high-resolution audio streams up to 24-bit/96 kHz. The $300 earbuds also feature Dolby Atmos spatial audio with dynamic head-tracking, updated active noise cancellation, and AI-based voice enhancement algorithms for calls.

The Momentum True Wireless 5 goes on sale September 3 in five metallic color options: Graphite, Cream, Copper, Denim, and Lavender. Hardware settings and frequency tuning are handled through a newly released Smart Control Plus app, which adds an eight-band equalizer to the mobile interface. Sennheiser rates the standalone battery life at up to 12 hours of continuous playback per charge, extending to 40 total hours with the charging case.
