Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 Debuts With User-Replaceable Batteries

The $300 flagship earbuds feature Bluetooth 6.0, upgraded active noise cancellation, and self-serviceable battery compartments.

There’s also a new design for increased comfort.

User-replaceable batteries are coming to flagship consumer audio as Sennheiser updates its flagship earbud lineup with the Momentum True Wireless 5. While the updated earbuds introduce multiple hardware enhancements, the ability for owners to swap out the internal batteries stands as the headline addition.

The modular battery design extends to both the earpieces and the portable charging case, with Sennheiser stating that swapped units take “mere minutes” to replace using only a compact screwdriver. Because micro lithium-ion cells suffer high degradation rates over brief usage periods, self-serviceable power cells mark a notable operational shift for buyers.

Most true wireless audio products rely on glued-in lithium-ion batteries that lose significant capacity after 300 to 500 charge cycles, frequently forcing consumers to discard working electronics. By introducing accessible screws and modular cells, Sennheiser aligns with growing right-to-repair regulatory pushes in Europe and North America aimed at reducing electronic waste in personal audio devices.

Runtime per charge has also increased across the board with the upgraded release. Listeners receive 12 hours of continuous audio playback from the earpieces, expanding to 40 hours total output when replenished via the case. A quick charge system provides an extra hour of listening after eight minutes connected to a wall outlet.

In terms of aesthetics, the True Wireless 5 adopts a slimmer form factor than the outgoing True Wireless 4. Sennheiser claims the revamped shell provides a “barely there” fit, noting that internal product testers favored the new shape over the prior generation by 73 percent. Complementing the buds, the charging case features a narrowed profile designed for easier pocket storage.

Call quality gets an upgrade via an AI speech enhancement algorithm engineered to isolate voice signals. The active noise cancellation hardware relies on updated ear tips alongside a four-microphone array. According to Sennheiser, the hardware revision is designed to “maximize noise cancelling performance while delivering the series’ most natural-sounding, real-time transparency mode.”

Acoustic performance centers on the manufacturer’s 7mm TrueResponse transducer paired with Bluetooth 6.0 wireless streaming. That connection standard supports high-resolution audio files up to 24-bit and 96kHz. Users can fine-tune sound profiles through a free mobile application equipped with an 8-band EQ, while built-in accelerometers supply head-tracking for spatial audio content.

Priced at $300, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 earbuds are scheduled to launch on September 3. Buyers will have the choice of five different colorways at release.
