Manchester United Open Talks for £14m Spanish Starlet Jorge Salinas

Premier League giants contact Racing Santander over 19-year-old defender who holds a £14m release clause

Racing Santander face a fight to keep hold of rising star Jorge Salinas after Manchester United opened preliminary discussions to acquire the defender, according to TEAMtalk.

The 19-year-old launched his youth career at Marina Sport, subsequently spending time at Monte and Bansander before entering Los Verdiblancos’ academy at age 12.

After progressing through the youth ranks, he made his senior debut two seasons ago and established himself as a fixture in the starting XI last term.

Across 33 La Liga 2 appearances last season, the Spaniard recorded seven assists and contributed to seven clean sheets while helping push his club to promotion.

Salinas was part of the Spain squad that won the U19 European Championship over the summer, and he recently featured in Racing’s opening La Liga fixture against Villarreal last weekend.

TEAMtalk reported that Manchester United talent evaluators have tracked Salinas since last season, including monitoring his international outings for Spain U19.

Impressed by his rapid progression, United officials initiated discussions with Racing Santander and the player’s agents regarding a potential transfer prior to the window closing.

Salinas to Man Utd

With the defender under contract through 2029, Los Verdiblancos are under no financial obligation to sell, though his agreement includes a £14m [€16m] release clause, the report indicated.

Under Spanish labor regulations, release clauses are mandatory in professional contracts, setting maximum valuation limits that frequently leave domestic clubs vulnerable to interest from wealthier foreign leagues. A £14m valuation presents a low-risk outlay for Premier League clubs seeking high-upside defensive prospects.

TEAMtalk noted that Manchester United must navigate competing interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, though the Blaugrana are reluctant to pay the full buyout figure.

Los Rojiblancos are targeting Salinas to fill the defensive vacancy left after Matteo Ruggeri joined Aston Villa, but the Madrid club is concerned United could submit a formal bid shortly.

Salinas operates as a left-footed defender who blends acceleration with strong technical mechanics, providing attacking width while maintaining consistent defensive positioning.

His rapid emergence suggests considerable long-term upside, making him an attractive target for Manchester United as they build out squad depth.

With Barcelona refusing to meet the required buyout terms, the timeline for any transfer now hinges on whether Atletico Madrid act before United convert their initial inquiries into a binding offer.
