Williams has evolved significantly since his £12 million move from Liverpool four years ago, amassing over 150 appearances for Forest. Though naturally right-footed, he has primarily operated on the left flank for the Tricky Trees. The tactical flexibility of the current squad already includes Noussair Mazraoui, who featured prominently as a left-back during Morocco’s 2022 World Cup campaign. However, with Patrick Dorgu increasingly utilized in advanced winger roles, the United coaching staff is identifying a need for a dedicated defensive hybrid.
Forest is reportedly keen to retain the 25-year-old and is preparing an improved contract offer to replace his current deal, which has three years remaining. However, BBC Sport suggests that an offer in the region of £30 million could test Forest’s resolve.
Statistically, Williams has become one of the more active defenders in the bottom half of the table. Last season, he averaged 2.6 tackles and 4.4 recoveries per match, while contributing five goal involvements. These figures represent a significant maturation from the player who struggled for consistent minutes at Anfield.
