Tottenham Targets Sporting Star Morten Hjulmand Amid Midfield Woes
Manchester United and Juventus also tracking the £70m-rated Danish international as Spurs seek to reverse their season's fortunes.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly targeting Sporting CP star Morten Hjulmand as they seek to address persistent midfield issues. The North London club, currently languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table, has endured a challenging season, securing only two victories in their last 12 league matches.
Following a difficult previous campaign, Tottenham dismissed Ange Postecoglou, bringing in Thomas Frank as the new manager. Despite the change, the team’s struggles have continued, accumulating just 27 points from 21 matches, leading to recent speculation regarding Frank’s long-term future. Reports suggest a significant midfield upgrade is essential to reverse the club’s fortunes.
Hjulmand, a key figure for Sporting CP, has emerged as a prime target. However, Tottenham faces stiff competition for the Danish international’s signature, with Manchester United also showing interest and Juventus reportedly plotting a swoop.
Last summer, Spurs brought in João Palhinha on a loan deal from Bayern Munich to bolster their engine room. While Palhinha notably scored an excellent overhead kick against Bournemouth recently, he has struggled to secure regular playing time in recent matches, making a permanent move unlikely at the end of the current campaign.
Sporting CP is reportedly in no rush to sell Hjulmand during the January transfer window, given his contract runs until 2028. The Portuguese giants are said to be seeking at least £70 million for the midfielder.
Since joining Sporting from Lecce in 2023, the 26-year-old Dane has enjoyed considerable success, contributing to two Liga Portugal titles and a Taca de Portugal. He is currently playing a pivotal role in his side’s ongoing title challenge this season.
Hjulmand is primarily a deep-lying playmaker but also excels in a box-to-box role. Known for his dynamic play, technical prowess, ability to deliver threading passes between the lines, and efficient defensive contributions, he is considered to be in the prime stage of his career. Both Manchester United and Tottenham could find him a shrewd acquisition.
The coming weeks will reveal whether either North London or Old Trafford clubs make a concrete approach to secure his services this month.
