Daily Spoken Words Dropped Nearly 30% Over 14 Years as Automation Replaced Interpersonal Exchanges
A 14-year cross-continental study shows automated retail and app ordering removed hundreds of spoken words per day from human speech.
The average individual spoke nearly 28% fewer words per day in 2019 than in 2007, according to a multi-year study mapping a sustained decline in human verbal communication driven by retail automation and digital convenience services.
Research published in Perspectives on Psychological Science by Valeria Pfeifer of the University of Missouri–Kansas City and Matthias Mehl of the University of Arizona reveals that daily spoken output declined by an average of 338 words per person for every year between 2005 and 2019. Over the 14-year period analyzed, average speech dropped from 15,959 words per day in 2007 down to 12,792 words in the study’s most recent estimates.
The contraction in daily speech was particularly pronounced among younger demographics. Participants under age 25 lost an average of 451 words per year—a rate of decline 44% steeper than the 314-word annual reduction recorded among adults aged 25 and older.
“Younger adults are more likely to use an app to order food as opposed to going somewhere and actually eating it there,” Pfeifer said. “But beyond that, there are also larger changes in how what we consider polite, how society congregates, what we consider as acceptable behavior around others.”
The findings synthesize data from 22 separate studies tracking 2,197 participants between the ages of 10 and 94 across the U.S., Mexico, Australia, and Europe. Each subject wore passive audio recording devices that periodically captured snippets of ambient sound to calculate total daily word counts. The authors identified the trend while conducting control analysis for an unrelated replication project.
“That loss of words really adds up to a staggering number,” Pfeifer told Fortune.
The reduction in speech mirrors the rapid deployment of self-checkout kiosks, automated order terminals, and mobile delivery applications across consumer industries, which systematically eliminate routine verbal exchanges between customers and service staff. Sociological research by Jessica Finlay, an assistant professor of geography at the University of Colorado Boulder, highlights how conventional “third places” like neighborhood grocery stores have transitioned into transactional transit hubs focused strictly on speed, shrinking what she terms a person’s “relational portfolio.”
Pfeifer noted that modern convenience architecture operates on the explicit premise that interpersonal communication represents friction rather than value.
“Using the self checkout is more efficient because you don’t have to wait in line as much,” Pfeifer said. “You don’t have to waste time talking with the cashier. Instead, you just scan your stuff and leave.”
She questioned whether the hyper-optimization of personal schedules through technology yields genuine benefits. “Are we really making it more efficient?” she said. “And is that really something that’s desirable to us? I think is a question that we should certainly be causing more now.”
The decline in face-to-face verbal interaction coincides with growing economic and clinical attention on public health trends surrounding social isolation. Chronic loneliness costs the U.S. economy an estimated $406 billion annually in lost productivity and healthcare spending, while carrying a mortality risk equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
“Of course, we don’t know if it’s cause or effect,” Pfeifer said. “But I do definitely think that there is a contribution of this to the loneliness epidemic.”
Digital substitutes have proven structurally incapable of replacing spoken dialogue. “Research says it’s not the same,” Pfeifer noted, emphasizing that typed text messages produce weaker interpersonal bonds because their asynchronous nature permits delays and allows users to avoid engagement entirely.
“We know that having more conversations is tied to more positive emotions and to higher psychological well-being,” Pfeifer said. “We likely have fewer conversations because we have fewer opportunities to have social interactions, or some of those social interactions may not be as long or as intense as they used to be, and therefore we may not feel as connected with others.”
Although the dataset concluded in 2019, Pfeifer expects the drop in verbal engagement intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic as remote work and physical distancing erased remaining casual interactions. “It wasn’t really clear, like, what are the new social rules.”
Rather than requiring major lifestyle structural overhauls, Pfeifer suggested that regaining verbal output depends on small daily micro-habits. “It’s not, you know, spending an hour every day working out that’s going to make a difference, but it’s all these small habits that you have throughout the day,” Pfeifer said. “I do agree with how you’re describing our lives being so scheduled and so organized that there seems to be very little room for us to have an additional thing. But again, I think small habits are potentially a space where we can gain back some of those lost words.”
