Louisville Ladder Recalls 1.77 Million Attic Stairways Over Fall Hazard

Federal safety regulators have announced a nationwide recall of roughly 1.77 million attic stairway ladders manufactured by Kentucky-based Louisville Ladder Inc., citing a defect where structural bolts can break during use and cause severe falls.

According to a notice published Thursday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall covers gas strut-equipped units sold under the Louisville, Featherlite, Lite, and Century brand names. The regulatory agency warned that hardware failures on the folding assemblies present severe safety risks.

“The bolts on the attic stairway ladders can break while in use, posing a risk of serious injury or death from fall hazard,” the CPSC said.

Louisville Ladder has received 11 reports of bolts snapping, including one incident that resulted in injuries to a consumer’s neck, head, and back. The affected products include aluminum- and wood-frame ladders equipped with handrails that fold into ceiling openings.

The products were sold nationwide through major home improvement retailers and online platforms—including Home Depot, Lowe’s, Do It Best, Orgill, and Amazon—from November 2012 through July 2026. Retail prices ranged from approximately $170 to $600. Regulators noted an additional 13,054 units were sold in Canada.

The recall applies to models designed for ceiling heights between 7 feet 8 inches and 12 feet. Frame dimensions include widths of 22.5, 25.5, and 30 inches, and lengths of 54 and 60 inches. Consumers can locate the brand name and model number printed on the inside of the attic door.

Regulators are instructing consumers to immediately cease using the recalled ladders and register with the company to obtain a free repair kit. Federal product safety protocols require manufacturers in voluntary recalls to provide free remedies to mitigate identified risks.

Louisville Ladder could not immediately be reached for comment.
