MachineGames and id Software Release Free 19-Map Quake Expansion ‘Dawn of the Machine’
MachineGames and id Software launch a free 19-map campaign update celebrating 30 years of the iconic FPS.
Game developers MachineGames and id Software have launched “Dawn of the Machine,” a free 19-map expansion for the seminal first-person shooter Quake, releasing the content ahead of the title’s 30-year anniversary.
The update is available today for Quake owners across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Steam, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and the Microsoft PC Store, as well as via Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass subscriptions.
Developed by MachineGames—the studio behind Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and several titles in the rebooted Wolfenstein series—in collaboration with series creator id Software, the expansion introduces a time loop mechanic alongside new variants of the familiar Quake enemies and weapon arsenal.
In addition to the 19-map campaign, the release includes a new soundtrack and a new Deathmatch map tailored for competitive play.
Several of the franchise’s current and past leaders, including id Software co-founder and game design icon John Romero, detailed the project during a livestreamed panel discussion today at QuakeCon.
First launched in 1996, Quake revolutionized computer graphics with real-time 3D rendering and early internet multiplayer networking, laying core technical frameworks that defined the modern first-person shooter genre.
