TikTok Moderation Delay Follows Perez Hilton Self-Harm Livestream and Police Intervention

TikTok acknowledged a content moderation error delayed the removal of a livestream on Tuesday showing celebrity blogger Perez Hilton engaged in self-harm, an incident that prompted an emergency law enforcement response and Hilton’s subsequent hospitalization in Miami.

Deputies from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office responded to Hilton’s home Tuesday evening following multiple calls regarding an individual “livestreaming acts of self-harm on social media.” The department’s Crisis Response Unit and licensed mental health professionals engaged in de-escalation efforts after confirming Hilton was alone inside the residence.

The sheriff’s office confirmed Hilton was “safely recovered and transported by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to a local hospital, where he is receiving medical attention.” Hilton, whose legal name is Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., was placed under Florida’s Baker Act for an involuntary psychiatric evaluation, which permits designated facilities to hold individuals experiencing a mental health crisis for emergency evaluation lasting up to 72 hours.

A source familiar with the situation stated that Hilton suffered non-life-threatening injuries. “He’s alive,” the source said, adding that “He has superficial cuts all over the body.”

TikTok stated that while the initial stream violated its Community Guidelines and was flagged within minutes, human moderator error delayed its removal. The company said it notified law enforcement directly. After the initial stream was taken down, TikTok removed several subsequent livestreams within 90 seconds before permanently banning Hilton’s account.

Explaining the tactical response at the scene, a sheriff’s office spokesperson noted that “In many incidents involving a person experiencing a mental health crisis or actively harming themselves, deputies prioritize de-escalation by creating time, distance, and opportunities for communication.”

“Unless there is an immediate threat to others, slowing the situation and utilizing crisis intervention techniques can reduce the likelihood of a suicide-by-cop encounter and minimize the risk of injury to the individual, deputies, and the public,” the spokesperson added, noting that “Deputies quickly located the individual’s residence, where they spoke with family members on scene, and confirmed he was alone inside.”

Hilton’s family and management team released a statement confirming his hospitalization following the incident. “Many of you have reached out with concern for Perez, and we are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of love, support, and prayers,” the statement read. “We can confirm that Perez is receiving medical care, and our family’s focus right now is on his well-being. We kindly ask that you respect Perez’s privacy, as well as the privacy of his family, during this difficult time.”

“If and when we are able to share any updates, we will do so with everyone as soon as we can,” the family added. “Thank you for your compassion, understanding, and continued support.”
