Apple Music to Require Mandatory Labels on AI-Generated Songs

Platform moves away from voluntary disclosures as music labels push back against synthetic tracks

Apple Music is preparing to enforce a mandatory “Made With AI” label for songs on its platform that rely significantly on generative artificial intelligence, according to a report by Variety.

The upcoming mandate will require disclosures whenever a material portion of a track involves generative AI technology. This shift represents a direct escalation from Apple’s previous policy introduced earlier this year.

Under the existing framework, Apple integrated support for industry-standard Transparency Tags developed by data organization DDEX. However, those disclosures remained entirely voluntary, leaving the decision to tag AI-generated tracks to record labels and digital distributors.

The transition toward mandatory labeling comes as the global music industry pushes for stricter control over synthetic content flooding digital streaming platforms. Major record labels have voiced growing concern over uncredited synthetic tracks diluting royalty pools and misleading listeners.

Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group sued generative AI developers Suno and Udio over alleged copyright infringement, and industry trade groups and major music companies subsequently petitioned chart compilers to exclude fully automated synthetic tracks from official global rankings.

Competitors across the streaming sector have taken contrasting approaches to handling synthetic audio. French streaming service Deezer built proprietary detection tools to identify AI-generated tracks, while Spotify focused heavily on purging tracks linked to artificial streaming networks.

While Apple has not publicly announced a firm enforcement deadline, industry sources indicate the mandatory tags will roll out later this year.
