Dave Bautista Steps In as Kratos for Prime Video’s ‘God of War’ After On-Set Injury Forces Recast

Production moves forward with a two-season order as former WWE star takes over the lead role from Ryan Hurst.

Dave Bautista has officially been cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s upcoming live-action series adaptation of God of War. The former professional wrestler and action star replaces actor Ryan Hurst in the lead role, following a production decision prompted by an on-set emergency.

The casting change became necessary after Hurst sustained a severe injury while performing a stunt during filming. The injury required surgical intervention and an estimated recovery timeline of several months, threatening to stall the show’s shooting schedule. Rather than delaying production into next year, the studio opted to recast the character, officially tapping Bautista, who had previously been considered for the role. The project has already received a two-season order from Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television.

The high-profile project remains under the creative direction of showrunner Ronald D. Moore. Prior to the recasting, production had progressed sufficiently to generate early promotional materials, including a teaser first look that featured Hurst alongside young actor Callum Vinson, who remains attached to play Kratos’ son, Atreus.

Bautista brings extensive experience in major studio action franchises, having played Drax the Destroyer in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy series and Glossu Rabban in Legendary’s Dune films. Hurst, best known for his roles in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, had ironically previously voiced Thor in the 2022 video game God of War Ragnarök, making his initial casting as Kratos a notable connection to Santa Monica Studio’s gaming franchise.
