Manchester United Target Atalanta Defender Giorgio Scalvini to Reinforce Backline

Manchester United are actively monitoring Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini as the Premier League club looks to secure central defensive cover before the transfer window closes, according to a report from The Telegraph.

United’s interest comes amid an acute shortage of fit central defenders. Matthijs de Ligt has been sidelined for several months with an injury, while Lisandro Martínez has been hampered by recurring physical setbacks. With Harry Maguire also plagued by fitness issues and young defender Leny Yoro continuing his adaptation to English football, coaching options in defense remain heavily constrained alongside squad member Ayden Heaven.

Scalvini, 22, is under contract with Atalanta through 2028 and carries a market valuation of roughly £33 million. The Serie A club has historically held firm in transfer negotiations, previously securing a £72 million package from Manchester United for striker Rasmus Højlund in 2023, and faces no immediate pressure to sell.

Standing at 6-foot-4, the right-footed Italian is primarily deployed as a central defender but possesses the tactical flexibility to operate in defensive midfield. Scalvini registered 24 Serie A appearances last season, scoring three goals, adding one assist, and helping secure five clean sheets while demonstrating strong aerial ability and ball distribution from the back.

Questions remain regarding Scalvini’s own history of fitness problems, which have interrupted his availability in recent campaigns.
