WhatsApp Rollout Adds @All Group Pings, Anonymous Polls, and Chat Splitting Tools
Meta introduces broadcast mentions with admin protections alongside updated poll controls and direct subgroup creation.
WhatsApp has expanded its group communication tools with the launch of an @all broadcast tag, alongside targeted anti-spam controls, poll updates, and simplified subgroup creation.
The new @all mention functions similarly to mass notification tags on work platforms like Slack, Discord, and Microsoft Teams, pushing urgent alerts to every participant in a chat. To prevent broadcast abuse across WhatsApp’s platform of over two billion active users, Meta has built specific restrictions into the feature. In group chats with more than 32 participants, only admins can send an @all ping. While these mentions override standard muted chat settings, users retain the ability to disable @all pings entirely through their individual notification settings.
The update also overhauls interactive polling within chats. Poll creators can now define specific end times for voting, enable anonymous responses, and edit their poll questions within a 15-minute window after publishing to correct typos or update details.
Additionally, WhatsApp has added a direct group-splitting option. Users can spawn a separate side chat directly from an existing conversation with a single tap, bypassing the manual process of adding members one by one. The feature addresses organizational friction in large groups, where participant limits reach up to 1,024 members.
