AWS Revenue Surge and AI Migration Push Amazon Cloud Toward $1 Trillion Target
Accelerating cloud migrations and generative AI adoption drive AWS to a $169 billion annual run rate as Amazon boosts infrastructure spending.
Amazon Web Services delivered a record-breaking second quarter as enterprise cloud migrations and rapid artificial intelligence deployments converged, pushing the cloud provider’s annualized revenue run rate to $169 billion and prompting chief executive Andy Jassy to outline a path toward $1 trillion in long-term annual sales.
The cloud infrastructure leader posted quarterly revenue of $42.2 billion, representing a 37.6% year-over-year increase. The performance marks AWS’s fastest growth rate in 18 quarters and its fifth consecutive quarter of accelerating expansion, powered by a $4.6 billion sequential revenue gain—roughly 80% higher than its previous record for a single quarter. The unit’s total customer backlog surged to $496 billion, driving Amazon shares up more than 15% in Friday trading.
The quarter’s results reflect a fundamental structural shift in corporate technology investments. While roughly 85% of global IT spending remains tied to traditional on-premises data centers, Jassy projected during an earnings call with analysts that this ratio will invert over the next one to two decades as companies migrate core workloads to public cloud platforms.
To support this expansion, Amazon raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to $220 billion, up from a previous projection of $200 billion, driven primarily by data center construction and specialized chips for AI workloads. Capital spending increases across major hyperscalers—including competitors Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud—have drawn scrutiny from Wall Street over return timelines, yet market analysts at William Blair noted that investors responded positively to AWS due to its high operating margins and expanding backlogs.
Central to AWS’s current acceleration is its generative AI portfolio, which has reached an annualized revenue run rate exceeding $25 billion. In the second quarter alone, spending on Amazon Bedrock—the company’s fully managed platform for hosting foundation models—surpassed total customer expenditure across all prior quarters combined since its launch in 2023. More enterprises joined the Bedrock platform in the past six months than during its initial two years of operation.
Jassy described current enterprise AI adoption through a “barbell” market model. At one end sit specialized AI research organizations like Anthropic and OpenAI alongside consumer platforms such as ChatGPT, requiring massive upfront compute power. At the opposite end are cost-conscious enterprises applying automated AI tools to streamline internal operations, catch financial fraud, and automate customer services.
According to Jassy, the substantial middle segment—existing enterprise production workloads that have yet to integrate AI inference—will ultimately represent the largest share of market value as legacy applications undergo modernization.
Enterprise adoption has been particularly pronounced within heavily regulated sectors, according to Matt Wood, chief AI and technology officer at AWS. Industries such as healthcare, financial services, insurance, and manufacturing are adopting AI tools at a faster pace than many lower-regulated consumer sectors, primarily because pre-existing regulatory obligations forced them to establish structured data governance and security frameworks early.
Consulting executives note that technical flexibility has become a primary driver for corporate boards assessing cloud options. Val Henderson, chief executive of cloud consultancy Caylent, pointed to Bedrock’s architecture—which allows enterprises to route prompts across multiple foundation models including Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, and Amazon Nova based on cost and performance parameters—as a decisive enterprise selection factor.
The practical execution of this cloud-to-AI transition is demonstrated by enterprise organizations like the PGA Tour. Prior to migrating its operations, the golf organization relied on mobile data centers transported across the country in trucks to power tournament scoring and broadcasting systems.
After opening a new global headquarters five years ago without on-premises IT servers, the PGA Tour migrated its full digital operations to AWS, including its ShotLink ball-tracking system, media archives, web platforms, and scoring distributions. Following a renewed partnership agreement in the first quarter, the organization layered generative AI tools on top of its cloud data layer using Amazon Bedrock.
Today, the tour utilizes agentic AI platforms to generate 150 weekly golfer betting profiles in nine minutes and automates two-sentence commentary summaries across 32,000 shots per tournament, a feature introduced at the 2025 Players Championship. By 2026, the organization expanded into automated broadcast production using ShotLink telemetry to control camera selection and graphics, while providing personalized player analytics directly to fans via its mobile application.
David Provan, vice president of digital architecture for the PGA Tour, noted that the organization’s internal focus shifted away from executing isolated AI experiments toward integrating technology only where it resolves specific operational challenges, reflecting a broader maturing of enterprise software strategies across the cloud landscape.
