Federal Health Alert Issued for Frozen Burritos Sold at Midwestern Costco Locations

Federal food safety officials have issued a public health alert for a batch of frozen burritos distributed to Costco Wholesale stores across three Midwestern states, warning consumers that the product contains egg—a major food allergen not declared on the package labeling.

The alert applies specifically to Red’s Steak Cilantro and Lime Burritos produced on June 19. Because the affected items are no longer available for purchase in stores, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, did not request a formal recall. However, regulators warned that the frozen burritos are likely still stored in consumer freezers.

Distribution was concentrated in Costco locations across Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota. The burritos were packaged both individually and in 3-pound, 2-ounce cartons containing 10 burritos each. Products subject to the alert bear the establishment number “EST. 46069” inside the USDA mark of inspection, along with specific lot codes printed on the side of the packaging.

Under federal regulations, meat-containing food products fall under the regulatory jurisdiction of the USDA’s FSIS, whereas non-meat items are monitored by the Food and Drug Administration. Federal law mandates that major food allergens—including egg, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, crustacean shellfish, and sesame—must be explicitly declared on food packaging due to the risk of severe allergic reactions, including life-threatening anaphylaxis.

The mislabeling issue came to light after a customer noticed egg among the ingredients while consuming the burrito and reported the discrepancy directly to the manufacturer. The company subsequently notified federal inspectors. To date, no confirmed reports of adverse health reactions or illness linked to the consumption of the burritos have been submitted to public health authorities.

The specific lot codes associated with the public health alert include L1 SD6170 1503, L1 SD6170 1535, L1 SD6170 1606, L1 SD6170 1639, L1 SD6170 1717, L1 SD6170 1750, L1 SD6170 1831, L1 SD6170 1908, L1 SD6170 1954, L1 SD6170 2031, L1 SD6170 2108, and L1 SD6170 2130.

Consumers who have purchased these items are advised not to consume them. The USDA recommends either discarding the burritos immediately or returning them to the Costco location where they were originally purchased for a full refund.
