Sony Reaffirms Plan to Phase Out PS5 Discs by 2028 Despite Consumer Backlash

CFO Lin Tao confirmed during an investor call that the company will proceed with its 2028 digital transition plan.

Sony Group Corporation has reiterated its commitment to phase out physical optical discs for new PlayStation 5 titles by 2028, standing firm on a strategy that has sparked widespread debate across the interactive entertainment industry. Speaking during the company’s latest quarterly financial results Q&A, Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao addressed investor questions regarding consumer resistance to the transition, confirming that the hardware giant intends to proceed with the planned digital shift.

According to Tao, the decision reflects broader structural changes across media consumption, driven primarily by the overarching digitalization of content. While acknowledging the strong emotional attachment many players retain toward physical game packaging, Tao noted that Sony will cautiously move the transition forward while considering methods to keep players engaged within a fully digital ecosystem.

The move mirrors a decade-long shift in video game distribution. Digital download platforms, subscription services, and disc-less console variants have systematically eroded physical media market share. Major publishers increasingly report that a dominant percentage of full-game revenue now stems from direct network downloads, driven by instant accessibility and lower logistical overhead. According to financial disclosures published on Sony’s investor relations platform, software purchases have progressively favored network downloads over traditional retail sales in recent fiscal quarters.

Since Sony initially announced the 2028 target in early July, reaction from consumers and high-profile game creators has been swift. Prominent game directors such as Hideo Kojima and Yoko Taro have publicly lamented the retirement of disc media, highlighting concerns surrounding long-term software preservation, digital ownership rights, and the risk of titles becoming permanently unavailable if online servers close. Developers from Sandfall Interactive, the studio behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, have similarly expressed reservations about abandoning physical releases.

Under Sony’s stated policy, physical disc manufacturing will not cease instantly across all catalogs. Discs for software titles released prior to the 2028 cutoff will remain in production to fulfill ongoing legacy demand. However, all newly released native PlayStation 5 titles introduced after that date will be distributed exclusively through digital channels.
