Tether Reports $1.5 Billion Q2 Profit as Reserve Surplus Reaches $4.1 Billion
Strong Treasury yields and gold reserve expansions lift Tether's Q2 earnings despite broader market contractions.
Tether generated roughly $1.5 billion in net operating profit during the second quarter of 2026, marking a near 50 percent jump compared to the previous quarter even as the broader stablecoin sector experienced liquidity contractions.
According to the company’s latest quarterly attestation report as of June 30, total assets reached approximately $187.75 billion against liabilities of roughly $183.64 billion. The difference expanded Tether’s reserve surplus to $4.11 billion, providing an elevated equity buffer above its circulating token liabilities.
The bulk of the quarterly operating revenue was driven by returns on short-term U.S. Treasuries, overnight repurchase agreements, and high-liquidity government-backed assets. Stablecoin issuers routinely leverage high sovereign interest rates by holding yield-bearing debt while issuing dollar-pegged tokens that pay no interest to end users.
Circulating supply of Tether’s dollar-pegged token, USDT, rose by $446 million over the quarter to reach $184.6 billion. While aggregate market liquidity in digital assets tightened, Tether managed to extend its market share across the stablecoin market to over 60 percent.
Alongside income from sovereign debt, the company continued building its reserves in physical precious metals. Tether acquired an additional 14 metric tons of gold during the second quarter, lifting its cumulative balance to over 146 metric tons.
At the same time, the issuer reduced its balance sheet risk by scaling down secured lending exposure by $2.38 billion, a 15 percent decrease from the prior period.
In a public statement on X, Chief Executive Officer Paolo Ardoino highlighted the company’s trajectory, noting that Tether continues to expand financial access in emerging markets while steering capital toward access technology rather than speculative stock valuations in artificial intelligence.
Ardoino added that the financial attestation demonstrates the liquidity, discipline, and scale required to navigate changing market cycles while supporting hundreds of millions of users.
