EU Blacklists 18 Crypto and Payment Entities for Violating Russia Sanctions

The European Union has expanded its enforcement measures against sanctions evasion, placing 18 financial entities on a high-risk compliance list for offering payment and cryptocurrency services in direct violation of EU restrictions against Russia.

Included among the newly targeted organizations is a digital asset exchange that was previously penalized by the United Kingdom. European authorities cited the 18 service providers for continuing to process cross-border transactions and digital asset transfers for Russian interests, defying regulations designed to isolate Moscow from Western financial networks.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Western nations implemented sweeping financial measures, including cutting major Russian banks off from global interbank messaging networks. To prevent illicit capital flows through alternative routes, the European Council progressively tightened rules on digital assets, establishing a complete prohibition on providing crypto wallet, account, or custody services to Russian citizens and residents.

The joint focus on entities previously sanctioned by British authorities reflects heightened regulatory alignment between UK sanctions enforcement bodies and EU regulators. Under the listing, European financial operators are strictly prohibited from facilitating transactions with the named entities, exposing non-compliant firms to severe legal penalties and asset freezes across member states.
