GoPro Launches Wireless Mic System with Direct Camera Pairing and USB Connectivity

The action camera maker expands its creator hardware lineup with direct Bluetooth pairing, USB receiver options, and dual-channel recording capabilities.

GoPro has broadened its creator ecosystem with the launch of its dedicated Wireless Mic System, designed to offer seamless direct audio input for modern action cameras as well as smartphones and personal computers. The move marks the action camera manufacturer’s latest effort to capture a larger share of the rapidly growing compact wireless audio market, directly challenging established competitors such as DJI and Røde.

Since the launch of the GoPro Hero 12 Black, the company’s flagship cameras have featured built-in Bluetooth audio support, allowing creators to pair wireless earpieces and external microphones without requiring extra hardware adapters. The new Wireless Mic System leverages this architecture, allowing a single transmitter unit to connect directly to compatible GoPro cameras via Bluetooth. Users activate this direct mode through a specific power button sequence, enabling instant wireless voice pickup with onboard active noise reduction confirmed by an LED indicator.

However, while direct Bluetooth transmission eliminates the need for external attachments, physical hardware receivers remain essential for higher fidelity and multi-channel workflows. The kit includes both a USB-C receiver dongle designed to fit into the recessed power ports of GoPro cameras and mobile devices, as well as a standard 3.5mm TRS receiver for broader equipment compatibility.

When using the hardware receivers, content creators can record two audio channels simultaneously, a key requirement for dual-person interviews and creator vlogs. In tests using the USB receiver with a GoPro camera, the system records each microphone onto isolated left and right audio channels in a split-stereo configuration. While this dual-mono recording method preserves individual track control for post-production editing, the USB dongle currently lacks a built-in hardware switch or app setting to toggle between stereo and summed mono playback.

Consequently, users importing video directly to mobile devices or streaming platforms without post-editing face hard-panned spatial audio, where one speaker appears exclusively in the left ear and the second in the right. Mobile creators using third-party recording software such as the Blackmagic Camera app can merge audio channels on input, but standard camera applications on iOS and Android require manual downmixing in desktop video editors.

The system also exhibits minor user interface quirks, such as the camera display rendering a single audio level meter even when both transmitters are actively recording dual-channel audio. Furthermore, unlike competing wireless audio ecosystems from DJI—which allow users to trigger camera recording directly from the transmitter unit—GoPro’s microphone system does not currently support remote shutter control on GoPro cameras.

These operational friction points could potentially be addressed through future firmware updates or software integrations within the GoPro Quik mobile application. Despite these initial software constraints, the hardware design provides robust physical mounting, modular connectivity across cameras and smartphones, and improved audio capture over standard Bluetooth connections.
