How Apple’s Digital Car Key Technology is Replacing Physical Fobs

The transition from physical fobs to smartphone-integrated credentials is accelerating as Apple’s digital key ecosystem expands across the automotive industry. What began in 2020 as an exclusive partnership with BMW has matured into a widely adopted feature, allowing drivers to lock, unlock, and start their vehicles using only their mobile devices.
At the core of this transition is a unified technological framework. Apple’s system is built on the global standard established by the Car Connectivity Consortium, a cross-industry group that aligns smartphone makers and automotive giants. By utilizing a combination of short-range technologies, the system offers both convenience and enhanced security over traditional wireless fobs, which have historically been vulnerable to relay theft attacks.
For basic tap-to-unlock functionality, the system relies on the phone’s built-in NFC chip. This requires physical proximity, mimicking the tap-to-pay experience popularized by mobile banking. However, newer hardware configurations leverage an ultra-wideband chip, specifically Apple’s U1 chip, to enable passive entry. With this technology, the vehicle can detect the precise location of the driver as they approach, unlocking the doors automatically without requiring them to remove the device from their pocket.
To utilize digital car keys, users must have a compatible device running iOS 13 or later. This includes the iPhone XS and subsequent models, as well as the second-generation iPhone SE or newer. On the automotive side, compatibility has expanded significantly beyond its initial launch. Major manufacturers supporting the feature now include Audi, BMW, BYD, EXEED, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Lotus, Mercedes-Benz, Mini, Nio, Polestar, Ram, Rivian, and Volvo.
Setting up a digital key typically begins through the vehicle manufacturer’s proprietary application or via an email invitation. The process pairs the vehicle with the Wallet app, occasionally requiring the user to place their iPhone directly on the car’s physical key reader to complete the cryptographic handshake. Once configured, the key is securely stored in the device’s secure enclave.
One of the most practical features of this integration is Express Mode. When enabled, this setting allows the driver to unlock and start the vehicle without authenticating via Face ID or passcode, and even without waking the screen. This feature also addresses a common concern among drivers: dead batteries. If an iPhone runs out of power, the Express Mode digital key remains functional for up to five hours using a dedicated power reserve.
The digital ecosystem also changes how vehicle access is shared. Users can distribute virtual keys to family or friends directly through the Wallet app, applying optional security measures such as one-time activation codes. If a device is misplaced or stolen, owners can remotely disable all active digital credentials by marking the iPhone as lost within the Find My app. While these digital systems offer unprecedented convenience, automotive experts still recommend keeping a physical backup key available to mitigate unexpected software or hardware failures.
