Chelsea Attempts Late Hijack of Atletico Madrid’s Deal for Morten Hjulmand
The Blues attempt to outbid Atletico Madrid for the Sporting Lisbon midfielder.

Chelsea has launched a late attempt to intercept Morten Hjulmand’s move to Atletico Madrid, signaling a shift in recruitment strategy as Xabi Alonso takes charge at Stamford Bridge. While Atletico Madrid has reportedly reached a £35 million agreement with Sporting Lisbon, Chelsea is prepared to leverage its financial muscle to lure the Danish international to London.
According to Cadena SER, the London club is offering Hjulmand a significantly improved contract compared to the terms proposed by the Spanish side. This move comes just five weeks before the Premier League season commences, highlighting Alonso’s urgency to stabilize a midfield currently clouded by uncertainty over Enzo Fernandez’s future.
The 27-year-old midfielder has emerged as a primary target due to his physical presence and ball-winning capabilities. Hjulmand’s profile—characterized by high-intensity pressing and progressive passing—aligns with the tactical demands Alonso utilized during his successful tenure at Bayer Leverkusen, where a disciplined defensive anchor was central to his system.
However, Chelsea faces a significant structural hurdle. Unlike Atletico Madrid, which offers Champions League football, Chelsea will remain absent from European competition this season. Fabrizio Romano previously indicated that Atletico’s deal was nearing completion, but Chelsea’s willingness to exceed the £35 million valuation could force Sporting Lisbon to reconsider.
Hjulmand’s contract includes a £70 million release clause. While Atletico’s current agreement sits at half that figure, Chelsea’s intervention may drive the price closer to the buyout amount. The Danish international’s arrival would provide Alonso with a robust defensive anchor, a role essential for the high-possession, transition-heavy style favored by the new manager.
