Everton Target £33m Bologna Forward Santiago Castro as Beto Successor
The Toffees lead the race for the £33m-rated Argentine striker amid interest from Chelsea and Nottingham Forest.

Everton have emerged as strong suitors for Bologna forward Santiago Castro, with the Merseyside club identifying the highly-rated 21-year-old as a key target to bolster their attacking ranks this summer.
According to a report by Corriere di Bologna, relayed via Sport Witness, the Toffees are actively exploring a move for the Argentine centre-forward. The Serie A side’s failure to qualify for European competition this season has reportedly put them under pressure to trim their squad, making the sale of several high-profile players a distinct possibility. Bologna have established a £33 million valuation for the youngster, sparking intense interest from the Premier League.
The Beto Succession Plan
Everton’s pursuit of Castro is closely linked to the uncertain future of Portuguese striker Beto. With his contract set to expire next summer, Beto faces an unclear path forward at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Should the forward depart during the current transfer window, Everton have earmarked Castro as his primary replacement.
A statistical comparison between the two attackers highlights why Everton view the young Argentine as a viable successor. Last season, Castro recorded 15 goal contributions across all competitions, with nine of those coming in Serie A. This output closely mirrors that of Beto, who registered ten goal contributions for the Blues. In terms of attacking threat, Castro averaged 2.40 shots per 90 minutes, compared to Beto’s 2.57. While the transition may initially seem like a lateral move, Castro’s age and significant developmental upside make him an incredibly attractive prospect for the Everton hierarchy.
A Meteoric Rise in Italy
Castro’s stock has risen dramatically since his move to Europe in January 2024. He quickly became an integral part of a historic period for Bologna, playing a key role in ending the club’s 51-year trophy drought. That memorable run culminated in a 1-0 victory over AC Milan to lift the 2025 Coppa Italia. Under the stewardship of manager Vincenzo Italiano, Castro also featured prominently in the club’s European campaign, helping them reach the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals before they were eliminated by eventual tournament winners Aston Villa.
From Velez Sarsfield to Europe
Before making waves in European football, Castro developed his skills in his native Argentina with Velez Sarsfield. The Buenos Aires-based club is historically celebrated for its prolific youth academy, which has consistently produced top-tier talent for the global stage. Castro made his professional debut for the 11-time Argentine champions at just 16 years old, appearing in a league match against Atlético Tucumán on August 3, 2021.
He went on to make 64 additional appearances for Velez Sarsfield. Although his return of 12 goal contributions during his formative years in Argentina appeared modest, his physical attributes, intelligent off-the-ball movement, and high ceiling convinced Bologna to secure his services.
Premier League Competition
Everton are not alone in their admiration of the young striker. Premier League rivals Chelsea and Nottingham Forest have also been credited with an interest in the Argentine. However, reports suggest that Everton currently hold the strongest interest as they look to secure a deal before the transfer window closes.
