Newcastle Initiates Danilo Talks as Strategic Contingency for Potential Guimaraes Exit
Strategic planning begins for post-Guimaraes era.

Newcastle United has entered preliminary discussions with representatives for Botafogo midfielder Danilo, positioning the Brazilian as the primary successor should captain Bruno Guimaraes finalize a move to Arsenal.
According to reporting from O Globo, the move represents a proactive effort by the Tyneside club to avoid a recruitment vacuum. While no formal offer has been submitted to Botafogo, Newcastle has signaled to Danilo’s camp that he is the priority target in the event of a high-profile midfield vacancy.
This strategy reflects a broader shift in how elite clubs manage elite assets. Under current Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), high-value sales have become a structural necessity for clubs looking to overhaul squads without breaching spending limits. Replacing a foundational player like Guimaraes requires identifying functional equivalents before a sale is even sanctioned.
Danilo offers a specific advantage: he is already acclimated to the physical demands of English football. During his tenure at Nottingham Forest, he made 62 appearances, recording six goals and four assists. Although a significant leg break interrupted his 2024-25 campaign and prompted a return to Brazil, his recent form suggests a full recovery.
His output since joining Botafogo has been efficient. Danilo concluded the domestic season with seven goals and two assists across 12 league matches. His resume also includes four appearances at the World Cup, providing the international pedigree Newcastle requires for its starting XI.
The logic behind the pursuit is centered on replacement of function rather than mere sentiment. Guimaraes has served as the tactical heartbeat of the squad, but Newcastle’s recruitment team appears focused on securing a player capable of maintaining technical ball progression and final-third contributions.
For Newcastle, the transition from Guimaraes to Danilo would represent a calculated pivot. The club is prioritizing a player who has already demonstrated he can perform within the league’s structure, minimizing the traditional adaptation period required for South American imports.
Negotiations remain in the contingency phase. The progression of any deal for Danilo is strictly tethered to Arsenal’s pursuit of the Newcastle captain.
