Arsenal Handed Ben White Boost Before Sunderland Clash

LONDON — Arsenal will be tied for first place in the Premier League with Manchester City when it travels to the Stadium of Light, having collected a maximum nine points from its opening three domestic fixtures. The London club enters Saturday’s match against Sunderland after a 1-0 away victory over Italian side Napoli in European competition on Wednesday.

Ben White raised injury concerns after limping off during the final stages of the midweek match in Naples. The England international was replaced in the 82nd minute by midfielder Martin Zubimendi and left the pitch under visible discomfort.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said Friday at his pre-match news conference that White avoided significant damage, is feeling fine and remains available for selection against Sunderland. The defender’s fitness update arrives as Arsenal manages a congested early-season schedule.

Saturday’s fixture begins a quick turnaround for Arsenal, which returns to action three days later to host Ipswich Town in the League Cup. Arteta is also assessing whether another defender can return for the Sunderland trip.

Jurrien Timber has yet to appear in a competitive fixture this season while rehabilitating a groin injury sustained late in the previous campaign. The Netherlands international returned to full first-team training earlier this week and traveled with the squad to Italy, although he was not named to the active matchday roster against Napoli.

Arsenal’s defensive unit has faced multiple personnel limitations in the opening weeks of the season. French center-back William Saliba remains sidelined while completing his rehabilitation program, while summer signing Ezri Konsa has anchored the central defense alongside the existing unit following his offseason transfer from Aston Villa in the absence of Saliba and Cristhian Mosquera.

Arteta said Timber remains in good physical condition and will participate in Friday’s training session before the coaching staff makes a final determination regarding his inclusion for Saturday’s away fixture. The update on Timber comes alongside a positive recovery trajectory for Cristhian Mosquera, offering defensive reinforcements to a squad managing multiple competitions.

Mosquera is nearing a return after being sidelined with a thigh injury suffered during Arsenal’s 1-0 league win over Aston Villa on Aug. 31. The Spanish defender did not make the midweek trip to Italy, and Arteta said his rehabilitation is progressing well.

Team medical staff are scheduled to evaluate whether Mosquera can feature against Sunderland or whether his return will be reserved for Tuesday’s League Cup tie against Ipswich Town.
