Baptiste, Mboko Face Season-Ending Injuries After Breakout 2026

Both rising stars suffered major knee injuries in 2026 after achieving career-high rankings and landmark victories on the WTA Tour.

Injuries are an unavoidable reality of professional tennis, but two of the most upsetting setbacks in 2026 happened to up-and-coming American and Canadian stars Hailey Baptiste and Victoria Mboko.

Both suffered catastrophic season-ending injuries that abruptly halted their momentum on the WTA Tour. Tennis fans remain optimistic that Baptiste and Mboko will be back competing in 2027, though neither player has committed to a definite return date yet as they navigate lengthy rehabilitation timelines.

Baptiste, 24, achieved her career-high WTA World No. 25 ranking in early May. She beat then World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka weeks before at the Madrid Open, delivering a masterclass that stunned the Spanish crowd and signaled her arrival among the tour’s elite competitors.

Everything was headed in the right direction until she landed awkwardly during a match at Roland Garros, fell to the clay, and cried out in pain. The diagnosis was a torn ACL requiring surgery. Minor injuries had plagued her before, but she never required surgical intervention to recover until this devastating setback at the Paris Grand Slam.

She admits that her life has taken a quieter turn, with physical therapy now the biggest task of the day. Baptiste is making the most of her unexpected downtime by spending time with friends and family in her native Washington, DC, something the demanding global tennis schedule rarely allows her to do.

Baptiste credits her coaches Franklin Tiafoe—the twin brother of American star Frances Tiafoe—and Will Woodall, along with her father, for sticking by her through the grueling recovery process. She said: “They’ve been with me literally every step of the way. I think I spent maybe four days apart from them, and they’re the ones that are really helping me to get through this and making me feel some sort of comfort.”

Mboko recovering from MCL injury

Victoria Mboko experienced the thrill of a lifetime playing doubles alongside her childhood idol Serena Williams in Queens. The duo won their first-round match at the US Open before Mboko suffered a severe MCL injury during singles competition that ultimately ended her season.

The knee injury left her unable to defend her Canadian Open title, a breakthrough victory she secured the previous year, but she traveled to the tournament anyway to support the event and continue her rehabilitation away from the court.

Mboko climbed into the Top 10 for the first time in March 2026 as a 19-year-old, cementing her status as one of the most promising young talents in women’s tennis. She remains hopeful to return toward the beginning of the 2027 season to continue her rise and establish herself as one of the biggest stars of the game.
