Arsenal Hit by Academy Injury and Senior Squad Fitness Concerns

Marli Salmon injury adds to Arsenal’s growing fitness list

Arsenal’s Hale End academy talent was heavily involved during a busy schedule stretch when Max Dowman, Theo Julienne, and Ife Ibrahim joined Marli Salmon in the matchday squad for the Carabao Cup victory over Ipswich Town. Manager Mikel Arteta praised their physical and technical composure.

“A joy to have [Dowman], Marli as well, a 16-year-old, to play at the level with the physicality they have and to be able to handle that level, it’s remarkable,” Arteta said following the match.

Salmon, a 17-year-old academy defender, had earned his first senior start of the season in that tie and completed all 90 minutes. He has also been a regular fixture in Premier League 2, the primary competition for English club development squads.

Salmon was later forced to withdraw from the England Under-18 squad because of an unspecified injury. He had been selected for a triple-header against Italy, France, and Germany, with Chelsea youth player Gabriel Sambou subsequently called up to replace him. Neither Arsenal nor the Football Association has released specific details about the diagnosis or Salmon’s expected recovery timeline.

The withdrawal came as Arsenal monitored an expanding list of fitness issues affecting key players across multiple age groups and positions. Defender Piero Hincapie did not travel to join the Ecuador national team because of ongoing physical issues.

Senior midfielder Declan Rice also pulled out of the England national team framework under a load management protocol designed to regulate his physical output after an intense start to the campaign. Rice arrived at Arsenal from West Ham United in July 2023 for a fee of £105 million ($133 million) and has been a near-constant presence in the club’s starting lineup across domestic and European competitions.

Arsenal’s defensive group is dealing with further concerns. Key regulars William Saliba and Ben White, alongside summer arrival Cristhian Mosquera, are managing various physical limitations that require ongoing monitoring by the medical staff.

The physical setbacks and workload management are affecting manager Mikel Arteta’s tactical planning as Arsenal prepare for a demanding multi-competition fixture schedule. After the international break, the North London club returns to Premier League action against Leeds United.

Arsenal will then shift focus to European competition, facing German champions Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League group stage. The heavy fixture schedule will test Arsenal’s roster depth as Arteta balances competitive targets in domestic league play, cup competitions, and Europe.
