Arsenal’s Defensive Crisis Deepens After Brighton Collapse

White and Mosquera near returns as Saliba remains sidelined

Arsenal’s seven-match winning streak to start the season ended with a 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium, sending the club into the October international break with severe strain across its back line.

The next Premier League match is scheduled for Oct. 10 against Leeds United at Emirates Stadium. The nearly three-week hiatus gives Arsenal’s medical and coaching staff time to restore key options before that fixture.

Right-back Ben White is nearing a return to first-team action after suffering a groin injury during Arsenal’s 2-0 victory against Sunderland on Sept. 12. He missed the EFL Cup fixture against Ipswich Town and the defeat at Brighton.

Before the match at the Amex Stadium, manager Mikel Arteta said White was close to selection: “Ben is all good, we have another training session this afternoon, so very positive about everybody.” White was ultimately omitted from the squad as a precaution, but his recovery remains on track for the Oct. 10 meeting with Leeds United.

Arsenal’s tactical breakdown became most pronounced in the second half, when starting defender Jurrien Timber was forced off the pitch. With no natural fullbacks available on the bench, Arteta used primary midfielders Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi in an improvised setup in which both shared right-back duties for the remainder of the match.

Central defender Piero Hincapie had been cleared to return to the matchday squad as a substitute. Once the lineup was reshuffled, however, Arsenal struggled to win individual duels and maintain its defensive shape against Brighton’s press.

Defender Cristhian Mosquera is also approaching the final stages of rehabilitation from a muscle injury suffered in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa on Aug. 31. He has missed the club’s last five matches in all competitions.

Mosquera traveled with the squad to Brighton and watched the pre-match warm-ups from the touchline in his tracksuit. The extended break without competitive matches gives him adequate time to complete full-contact training without forcing an accelerated return to play.

William Saliba remains on an extended recovery pathway after being sidelined since July with a back injury. Following initial medical assessments, Arsenal released an official update: “Specialist reviews on William’s return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation.”

Saliba did not undergo surgery. Arsenal included him in its registered squad for the UEFA Champions League group stage, confirming his projected availability for the European campaign later in the season. Club officials are taking a conservative approach to his workload, with potential return milestones targeting November.

The three-week period between the Brighton defeat and the Leeds United match gives Arteta time to re-integrate returning personnel, re-establish defensive continuity, and eliminate emergency midfield adaptations ahead of a demanding autumn fixture list across domestic and continental competitions.
