Apple’s $2,500 Foldable Requires $89 Stylus Upgrade for Pencil Support

Most pre-orders delayed to 2027; USB-C Pencil mandate adds $79 to $2,499 base price

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple’s first foldable iPhone arrives in stores Friday, but early adopters face a dual reality: severely constrained supply and a mandatory accessory purchase to unlock the device’s headline stylus feature.

The iPhone Duo, priced from $2,499, will reach only a fraction of pre-order customers this month. Most buyers face delivery estimates stretching into January 2027, according to shipping notifications reviewed by Reuters.

For those receiving units this week, Apple Pencil functionality activates with iOS 27.2, scheduled for public release next week. The device ships with iOS 27.1 preinstalled.

Max Weinbach, a technology analyst who received early access, confirmed the Release Candidate enables stylus input on both the 7.6-inch internal display and 5.4-inch cover screen. His findings were posted to X Monday.

However, Apple restricts compatibility to the USB-C model of Apple Pencil, sold separately for $79. The first-generation, second-generation, and Pro models — owned by millions of existing iPad users — will not pair with the foldable.

This creates a $2,578 minimum entry point for the complete experience, excluding tax and AppleCare+. The USB-C Pencil launched in late 2023 as a mid-tier option lacking pressure sensitivity and hover detection found in the $129 Pro model.

Analysts view the restriction as a deliberate ecosystem play. “Apple is using the foldable to drive adoption of its newest accessory standard,” said Carolina Milanesi of Creative Strategies. “Existing Pencil owners are effectively locked out unless they upgrade.”

The staggered rollout mirrors Apple’s Vision Pro launch, where initial supply constraints created a secondary market with units selling above list price. Early iPhone Duo listings on Swappa and eBay already exceed $3,500.

Apple has not commented on production volumes or the Pencil compatibility decision. The company previously stated only that stylus support would arrive “later this year” without specifying the USB-C requirement.
