MrBeast’s Beast Industries Operates Like a Fortune 500 Firm After Hiring Ex-Shutterfly CEO, Buying Fintech App Step

Former Shutterfly CEO now runs Beast Industries as holding company acquires youth banking app Step

North Carolina-based Beast Industries, the holding company behind Jimmy Donaldson’s MrBeast empire, has quietly adopted the operating playbook of a traditional conglomerate. The company appointed former Shutterfly chief executive Jeffrey Housenbold as president and chief operating officer in May 2024, then elevated him to chief executive by September, according to Pitchbook data cited by Fortune. Donaldson, 26, retains majority ownership and creative control.

The personnel move signals a structural shift. Housenbold led Shutterfly for 11 years through its initial public offering and eventual $2.7 billion sale to Apollo Global Management. His recruitment suggests Beast Industries is preparing for scale that exceeds typical creator-led ventures, which often rely on the founder’s personal brand rather than institutional management.

Valued at $5 billion with more than 1,000 employees, Beast Industries now oversees a portfolio spanning Feastables chocolate, MrBeast Burger, an Amazon content deal, and a production arm. In February, the company acquired Step, a money-management application targeting teenagers and young adults. The deal marks the holding company’s first entry into financial services and positions it to capture the banking relationship of a demographic that grew up watching Donaldson’s videos.

Steven Bartlett, an investor in Beast Industries and host of The Diary of a CEO podcast, described the company’s structure as resembling a Fortune 500 holding company. “They just bought a bank,” Bartlett told Fortune Daily, referring to the Step acquisition. He characterized the development as a fifth era in the creator economy, where founders engage in mergers and acquisitions and install C-suite executives drawn from public companies.

Other creators have pursued similar trajectories. Linus Sebastian converted his technology channels into Linus Media Group, where merchandise accounted for nearly one-third of revenue in 2022. Jake and Logan Paul launched the energy drink Prime and personal-care brand W, respectively. But few have integrated a public-company veteran into the chief executive role while the founder remains in his twenties.

The Step acquisition also raises regulatory questions. Fintech products marketed to minors face scrutiny from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and state regulators over data privacy, fee transparency, and marketing practices. Beast Industries has not disclosed whether Step will operate as a standalone brand or be integrated into the MrBeast ecosystem.

Donaldson uploaded his first video, a Minecraft walkthrough, at age 13. Fifteen years later, his holding company’s trajectory — professional management, nine-figure valuation, and a banking-app purchase — resembles a private-equity roll-up more than a typical influencer business.
