With central defensive anchor William Saliba sidelined long-term, and both Jurrien Timber and Cristhian Mosquera working their way back from injuries, Arsenal’s newly fortified squad depth is under the spotlight. Arteta’s side travels to the Stadium of Light to face an in-form Sunderland team currently unbeaten in three matches, a fixture that has historically tested the resolve of title contenders.

The primary focus for Arsenal’s medical and coaching staff is managing the reintegration of Jurrien Timber. The Dutch international defender has endured a grueling rehabilitation process since damaging his groin during a Premier League fixture against Everton in March. Although Timber made a brief substitute appearance in the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain in May, the comeback proved premature. The absence of Saliba has been mitigated by the performance of Ezri Konsa, who stepped into the starting lineup alongside Gabriel Magalhães. Konsa’s opportunity arose after young defender Cristhian Mosquera sustained a muscular injury during a recent match against Aston Villa. Mosquera’s injury ruled him out of Arsenal’s subsequent victories over Chelsea and Napoli.

Timber’s recovery has reached its final stages. He has participated in full first-team training sessions for several weeks and was included in the traveling squad for the midweek fixture in Naples, though he remained an unused substitute.

The coaching staff faces a strategic choice: introduce Timber back into Premier League action at the Stadium of Light, or hold him back for the upcoming Carabao Cup fixture against Ipswich Town, where the physical demands may be less intense. While Timber nears a return, the timeline for William Saliba remains far more conservative. The French international central defender has not featured this season after aggravating a persistent back issue during France’s run to the World Cup semifinals. Arsenal’s medical staff opted for a non-surgical, conservative rehabilitation program to address the injury.

Arteta confirmed that Timber’s physical condition is highly encouraging ahead of the weekend. The manager noted that the defender has spent several weeks training on the pitch with the squad and is in a positive frame of mind. A final decision on whether Timber will travel to Sunderland will be made following the team’s final training session on Saturday.

Arteta urged patience regarding Saliba’s recovery, emphasizing that back injuries do not follow a linear path. The coaching staff is focusing on how the defender’s back responds to increased physical workloads before setting a definitive return date. While Saliba’s progress over the past few weeks has been steady, he is not expected to return to first-team action until late autumn, with November or December viewed as the most realistic targets.

Despite the defensive rotation, Arsenal’s overall squad condition remains strong. Midfielder Bruno Guimarães returned to the bench against Napoli after recovering from a knock sustained against Aston Villa, providing Arteta with crucial tactical flexibility in central midfield. Additionally, captain Martin Ødegaard continues to lead the attack in sharp form, having scored the decisive goal in the midweek European victory.

Konsa’s composed performances in possession and aggressive defensive interventions have alleviated the pressure on Arteta to rush Mosquera back into the lineup. Mosquera’s injury is not considered severe, and his availability for the Sunderland match depends on a late fitness assessment. If held back, Mosquera, like Timber, could target the Carabao Cup tie against Ipswich Town for his return to the matchday squad.

The upcoming match against Sunderland presents a classic physical test for Arsenal’s defensive line.
