Free Agent Sancho Draws Premier League Interest as Dortmund Circles

Jadon Sancho’s unattached status has triggered a multi-league recruitment race, with at least two Premier League clubs making fresh approaches for the winger in recent days. Because the 26-year-old is currently without a club, he is exempt from standard transfer deadline restrictions, permitting him to sign with any team outside the traditional registration windows. This allows Sancho and his representatives to negotiate directly without requiring club-to-club transfer fees or deadline-day clearance.

Borussia Dortmund remains in active pursuit of a deal to bring the attacker back to the Bundesliga. The German club has faced attacking shortfalls following a long-term injury to Giannis Konstantelias, who is expected to miss the majority of the current campaign. Dortmund recently secured youth prospect Ethan Nwaneri on loan from Premier League side Arsenal, but continues to evaluate additions to its attacking line.

Sancho’s market availability has also drawn inquiries from expanding football markets in the Middle East and Eurasia. Teams in the Saudi Pro League and the Turkish Süper Lig have made inquiries regarding his salary terms and availability. Interest has also been expressed by Dubai-based club Arabian Falcons, currently managed by former Newcastle United and England midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.

A potential return to Dortmund would place Sancho back in the environment where he established his reputation as one of Europe’s top young prospects. After entering Watford’s youth academy at age seven and later joining Manchester City’s academy in 2015, Sancho declined a contract extension in Manchester to complete an £8 million ($10 million) move to Borussia Dortmund in August 2017. During his first four-year tenure in Germany between 2017 and 2021, Sancho made 137 competitive appearances for Dortmund, recording 50 goals and 64 assists.

His spell culminated in May 2021, when he scored twice in a 4–1 victory over RB Leipzig to win the DFB-Pokal. That performance led to a high-profile move to Manchester United in July 2021 for a reported transfer fee of £73 million ($100 million). Sancho signed a five-year deal at Old Trafford, but his tenure in the Premier League proved inconsistent across stints under managers Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick, and Erik ten Hag.

Following a public dispute regarding training selection in September 2023, Sancho was removed from first-team duties before returning to Dortmund on a short-term loan in January 2024, contributing to the club’s run to the UEFA Champions League final. Sancho later spent a loan period with Premier League club Aston Villa, where he recorded two goals across 39 appearances in all competitions. On the international stage, Sancho has represented England across multiple youth levels, winning the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017. He made his senior international debut for England in October 2018 against Croatia and has earned 23 caps, scoring three goals, including appearances during England’s run to the UEFA Euro 2020 final.
