Premier League Transfer Radar: Manchester United and Chelsea Eye Benfica’s Tomás Araújo as Jadon Sancho Holds Out

Benfica's £68M release clause keeps Araújo accessible as Juventus maps a total rebuild and top prospects draw cross-border interest.

Manchester United and Chelsea are positioning themselves to trigger a £68 million release clause for Benfica center-back Tomás Araújo, intensifying a Premier League pursuit that could reshape both clubs’ defensive planning well before the summer window.

Araújo, 24, recently committed his future to the Portuguese champions through 2031. That extension, however, did not eliminate his exit mechanism. The £68 million buyout clause remains active, meaning any club willing to meet the valuation can bypass Benfica entirely in negotiations. Both Manchester United and Chelsea operate with urgent defensive needs heading into the winter months. United have struggled with consistency at the back under their current tactical setup, while Chelsea continue to evaluate long-term partnerships in central defense despite heavy spending over the past three transfer cycles.

The versatility of the Portugal international adds significant value. Capable of operating as a traditional center-back or shifting to right-back, Araújo fits the profile of modern defenders required to navigate multiple formations. His integration into the senior squad accelerated after Benfica’s sale of António Silva’s peers and the departure of other defensive assets in recent windows, making him a cornerstone of their backline. Extracting him in January will require immediate financial commitment rather than prolonged negotiation.

While Premier League giants scout Lisbon, one of England’s most recognizable wingers remains without a club by choice. Jadon Sancho, who departed Old Trafford following the expiration of his contract this summer, is prepared to remain a free agent until January if suitable terms do not materialize immediately.

Sancho’s situation reflects a broader shift in player leverage. The 26-year-old’s career trajectory—from Borussia Dortmund standout to a fractured tenure in Manchester—has made him a polarizing figure in the market. Rather than accept a short-term or financially compromised deal before the current window closes, his camp is prioritizing project fit and guaranteed playing time. Remaining unattached allows him to negotiate outside standard registration deadlines in certain leagues, though it carries the risk of losing match fitness. Several European clubs have registered preliminary interest, but no advanced discussions have taken place.

The willingness of elite players to wait out the market contrasts sharply with clubs like Juventus, who are engineering a sweeping roster overhaul. The Turin side is evaluating a broad spectrum of targets across every position. Among the most ambitious is Alisson Becker, whose Liverpool contract expires at the end of the season. Securing the Brazilian goalkeeper on a free transfer would represent a massive coup, though Liverpool are expected to push for an extension to protect their defensive foundation.

Juventus have simultaneously drawn a hard line around their emerging talent. Kenan Yildiz, 21, and 19-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic have been designated untouchable. Yildiz previously fielded inquiries from Arsenal and Real Madrid but remains sidelined with an injury until December. Alajbegovic, acquired from Bayer Leverkusen over the summer, has already integrated into the first team, prompting early surveillance from Chelsea. Management’s stance signals a strategic pivot toward youth retention after years of high-profile veteran acquisitions.

Elsewhere in Europe, João Félix is mapping a route back to Barcelona. Now 27 and playing for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, the Portuguese forward’s contract expires next year. He spent a season on loan at Camp Nou previously, recording 10 goals and six assists across 44 appearances. While a return appeals to Félix as he eyes Champions League football again, Barcelona do not currently view him as a primary target amid their ongoing financial restructuring and La Liga salary cap constraints.

Defensive prospects continue to drive cross-border scouting networks. Inter Milan maintain their pursuit of Leeds United’s Tarik Muharemovic after failing to secure the 23-year-old Bosnia and Herzegovina international during the summer. Barcelona are tracking the same player. At Como, 21-year-old Jacobo Ramon has attracted simultaneous attention from Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea under manager Cesc Fàbregas, whose tactical deployment of young center-backs has turned the Serie A side into an unexpected showcase for elite defenders.

Veteran movement is accelerating as well. Bologna are finalizing a one-year contract for Matteo Darmian, the former Manchester United and Inter Milan defender, arriving as a free agent to cover for the injured Emil Holm. The Italian club is also negotiating an extension for 32-year-old Federico Bernardeschi. In the Middle East, Riyad Mahrez, 35, is nearing a free transfer to Qatari side Al Shamal following his summer exit from Al Ahli.

Looking ahead to the next generation, Club Tijuana playmaker Gilberto Mora is drawing interest from Liverpool, Barcelona, and Real Madrid. The 17-year-old Mexico international reportedly favors a move to Spain over the Premier League as his breakout continues.
