Mercedes-AMG’s 1,153-HP Electric SUV Arrives Summer 2027

Built on the 800-volt AMG.EA platform, the GT 63 trim uses a tri-motor setup to challenge the Lucid Air Sapphire.

Buyers will have to wait until summer 2027 to purchase the all-electric Mercedes-AMG GT SUV in the United States. Mercedes-Benz confirmed the vehicle will launch in three trims — GT 53, GT 55, and GT 63 — built on the automaker’s 800-volt AMG.EA platform.

The top-tier GT 63 uses a tri-motor configuration rated at 1,153 horsepower. That figure surpasses every combustion-powered model in the current AMG lineup, including the track-focused AMG One hypercar derived from Formula 1 engineering. The sedan variant, the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, shares the same electric architecture and output ceiling.

Footage captured by Instagram user joelre98 showed a prototype reversing off a transport truck outside an AMG facility. The clip revealed the vehicle’s physical footprint. Despite its low-slung, coupe-like roofline, the SUV occupies roughly the same road space as a G-Class observed passing it. This optical compression mirrors what Hyundai encountered with the Ioniq 5, where hatchback proportions routinely tricked consumers into underestimating the car’s actual dimensions in showrooms.

Mercedes-AMG opted for a visual identity that deliberately separates its battery-electric models from internal combustion vehicles. The front fascia features a large concave grille flanked by aggressive venting. The rear breaks entirely from AMG tradition, replacing conventional light bars with six round taillights housed inside a black surround. Ferrari adopted a similarly divisive circular lighting motif for its Luce EV.

This strategy fractures an industry consensus that previously favored uniformity. BMW is rolling out its Neue Klasse design language across both electric and combustion platforms. Audi and Mini have kept gas and electric variants nearly indistinguishable from the outside. Mercedes-Benz is betting that flagship performance buyers want their EVs to look fundamentally different from legacy models.

The six-taillight signature will not remain exclusive to the SUV. According to the company, the layout also appears on the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, indicating Mercedes-AMG intends to standardize the element across future high-performance electric vehicles rather than treating it as a one-off experiment.

Competitors are already occupying the four-figure horsepower bracket. The Lucid Air Sapphire generates 1,234 horsepower from a dual-motor setup, though its styling targets the traditional luxury chauffeur segment rather than the aggressive sport profile Mercedes-AMG is pursuing with the GT lineup.
