Nissan Pathfinder 40th Anniversary Edition Adds V6, Retro Interior
The limited-run SUV pairs a 284-horsepower V6 with throwback burgundy cabin trim and standard three-row utility.

Nissan is marking four decades of the Pathfinder with a limited Heritage Edition that pairs the SUV’s standard 3.5-liter V6 engine with burgundy upholstery and black 20-inch wheels, according to specifications released by the automaker. The anniversary model targets buyers seeking interior upgrades over mechanical changes, arriving at dealerships in the coming weeks without confirmed pricing.
The 1986 first-generation Pathfinder debuted as a rugged two-door body-on-frame truck built for off-road use. Today’s fifth-generation model functions strictly as a three-row family hauler on a unibody platform. Nissan has not attempted to replicate the original silhouette for this release, opting instead for cosmetic revisions to the current architecture.

Under the hood, the Heritage Edition retains the naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 producing 284 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Nissan bypassed turbocharged four-cylinder engines and continuously variable transmissions for this generation, a powertrain strategy shared with competitors like the Toyota Highlander. Fuel economy is expected to land near 22 mpg combined based on preliminary testing figures provided by the manufacturer.
Towing capacity starts at 3,500 pounds across the lineup. Properly equipped models reach 6,000 pounds, though the Heritage trim does not guarantee maximum towing capability. Buyers must verify specific vehicle configurations before hitching trailers, Nissan noted.

The cabin represents the primary deviation from standard Pathfinder trims. Two-tone interior panels and available burgundy upholstery replace the monochromatic black and gray options typical in the segment. This color treatment mirrors materials historically offered in the premium Infiniti QX60, which shares its underlying platform with the Pathfinder. Standard technology includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, multiple USB-C charging ports, and an available premium Bose audio system.

Nissan’s LATCH AND GLIDE second-row seating mechanism remains standard. The hardware allows third-row passengers to enter and exit even when a child seat is installed in the second row. Safety Shield 360 and Intelligent Forward Collision Warning are included as baseline driver-assistance features.

Available Intelligent 4WD provides seven selectable drive modes for varying surface conditions. Chassis tuning, suspension geometry, and steering ratios remain identical to other current Pathfinder variants. No mechanical components were altered for the anniversary package.

The Heritage Edition diverges sharply from Nissan’s off-road-oriented Rock Creek trim, which features lifted suspension and all-terrain tires. While early reports suggested Nissan might develop additional adventure-focused models to echo the original 1986 Pathfinder’s capabilities, the company has not announced any hardware beyond the current Rock Creek specification.

Final window sticker prices for the 40th anniversary Pathfinder have not been published.
