LeBron James Recalls Exact Lineups From 2003 NBA Debut

The 76ers forward enters his 24th NBA season chasing a fifth championship after reciting every starter from his 2003 opener.

LeBron James rattled off all 10 starters from his first NBA game without hesitation, a memory exercise that underscores the encyclopedic recall of a player now entering his 24th professional season.

With the anniversary of his Oct. 29, 2003, debut approaching, the Philadelphia 76ers forward listed the exact Cleveland Cavaliers and Sacramento Kings starting fives from that night. For the Cavaliers, he named himself alongside Ricky Davis, Darius Miles, Carlos Boozer and Zydrunas Ilgauskas. On the opposing side, he identified Mike Bibby, Doug Christie, Peja Stojakovic, Vlade Divac and Brad Miller.

The 2003-04 Kings were a legitimate championship contender built on elite ball movement and sharpshooting, eventually finishing 55-27 before falling to Kevin Garnett’s Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference semifinals. The Cavaliers, by contrast, won just 35 games that rookie campaign, though the franchise trajectory shifted permanently the moment James took the floor.

Davis famously referred to himself as the team’s primary scorer early in that 2003 season before management traded him to Boston in December to clear space for the 18-year-old phenom. Miles was a former No. 3 overall pick whose athleticism matched James’ but whose career lacked the same longevity. Boozer and Ilgauskas formed a bruising frontcourt that anchored Cleveland through its first wave of playoff contention later in the decade.

James spent eight seasons during his initial stint with Cleveland before departing for the Miami Heat in 2010, returning for a second run from 2014 to 2018 that delivered the city its first major sports championship in 52 years. Following four seasons in South Florida and two separate tenures with the Los Angeles Lakers totaling eight years, he signed with Philadelphia for the current campaign.

The move places a four-time champion inside a roster that pushed deep into the postseason last spring. Philadelphia finished the previous regular season 45-37, claiming the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference. The 76ers upset the Boston Celtics in a seven-game first-round series before being swept by the New York Knicks, who advanced to win the title.

Adding James gives Philadelphia a veteran closer capable of operating alongside their existing core, shifting the franchise’s ceiling from playoff participant to immediate championship favorite. His pursuit of a fifth ring aligns with an organization desperate to secure its first title since 1983.

Philadelphia concludes its exhibition schedule tonight, hosting Boston at 7 p.m. ET. The regular season opens on the road against the defending champion Knicks on Oct. 20.
