Manchester United Await Mainoo Fitness Verdict Ahead of Leeds Clash

Carrick weighs midfield options as Shaw, Dorgu absences force defensive reshuffle

Manchester United head into Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Leeds United at Old Trafford with manager Michael Carrick still awaiting definitive word on Kobbie Mainoo‘s availability, a decision that could reshape the hosts’ midfield configuration for the Yorkshire derby.

Mainoo, who has emerged as United’s most influential central midfielder this season, missed the midweek Champions League draw with Atlético Madrid due to a knock sustained in training. Carrick indicated Friday that the 19-year-old England international would undergo a final fitness test Saturday, with the club’s medical staff cautious about risking a recurrence.

“We’ll give him every chance,” Carrick said. “But we won’t take unnecessary risks with a player of his importance.”

If Mainoo is cleared, he is expected to slot directly into a double pivot alongside Carlos Baleba, pushing Youri Tielemans — restored to the starting XI for the Atlético match after a spell on the bench — back to a substitute role. Andrey Santos, who impressed in a deeper midfield role against the Spanish side, would also drop out despite a performance that earned praise from Carrick for its composure and progressive passing.

The Brazilian’s emergence has given Carrick an unexpected selection headache. Santos, 20, arrived on loan from Chelsea in January with limited first-team expectations but has started three of United’s last four matches across all competitions. His retention would signal confidence in the club’s January recruitment, but Mainoo’s unique profile — combining ball progression, press resistance, and defensive awareness — remains difficult to replicate.

Defensively, United are navigating a more settled crisis. Luke Shaw has not featured since February due to a hamstring complication, and summer signing Patrick Dorgu suffered a minor ankle issue in training this week that all but rules him out. The absences force Carrick into a makeshift left-back solution, with Diogo Dalot the leading candidate to invert from the right flank.

That shift would allow Leny Yoro, the 18-year-old French center-back signed from Lille last summer, to occupy right-back — a position he filled capably against Atlético. Harry Maguire is poised to return alongside Lisandro Martínez in central defense after being rested midweek; Carrick insisted the omission was “purely tactical” and unrelated to fitness.

Matthijs de Ligt, back in full training after a calf problem, is available for selection but likely ticketed for a bench role with a view to second-half minutes. The Dutchman’s reintegration is being managed cautiously given his injury history since arriving from Bayern Munich.

In goal, Senne Lammens is set for a third consecutive start with André Onana still working back from a shoulder issue sustained in the Manchester derby. The Belgian keeper has conceded once in his two appearances, keeping a clean sheet against Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

Further forward, the attack shows signs of stabilization. Amad Diallo returns on the right wing after serving a one-match domestic suspension, allowing Bruno Fernandes to resume his preferred number 10 role behind a central striker. Bryan Mbeumo, deployed as a false nine in Benjamin Šeško’s continued absence (thigh), has scored twice in three matches in the role and retains Carrick’s trust over Joshua Zirkzee.

Marcus Rashford’s place on the left is under threat after an anonymous display against Atlético. Matheus Cunha, the January arrival from Wolves, is favored to start after two sharp cameos off the bench. The Brazilian’s direct running and link play offer a different dimension to Rashford’s recent form, which has yielded one goal in his last nine outings.

Mason Mount, introduced for the final 25 minutes midweek and involved in United’s equalizer, provides another option from a bench that suddenly carries genuine attacking depth — a rarity in what has been a transitional season at Old Trafford.

United enter the fixture fifth in the table, four points adrift of the Champions League places with seven matches remaining. Leeds, under Daniel Farke, sit 14th but have taken points off Liverpool and Arsenal at home this season. The reverse fixture at Elland Road in December finished 2-2 after United surrendered a two-goal lead.

Carrick confirmed Friday that Noussair Mazraoui, sidelined since late February with a knee injury, has returned to full training and could feature in the matchday squad, offering another defensive option should the game state demand it.

The Mainoo decision is expected to be communicated to the squad Saturday evening, with the official team sheet released one hour before Sunday’s 4:30 p.m. BST kickoff.
