Volkanovski pitches double-retirement UFC title fight vs Gaethje

The featherweight champion must defeat Movsar Evloev at UFC 333 before pursuing the 155-pound belt

Alexander Volkanovski wants his final professional bout to carry stakes far beyond the 145-pound limit he has dominated for years. The reigning UFC featherweight champion is publicly lobbying for a lightweight title shot against Justin Gaethje, framing the matchup as a dual retirement event that would simultaneously vacate two of the promotion’s most competitive divisions.

The proposal arrives at a critical juncture for both fighters. Volkanovski, 38, holds the featherweight belt following a dominant run that included six successful defenses across two separate reigns. His victories over Max Holloway, Jose Aldo, and Diego Lopes cemented his status as the division’s premier competitor. Yet his pursuit of a second championship has proven elusive. A razor-thin unanimous decision loss to Islam Makhachev at UFC 284 in February 2023 kept him within striking distance of lightweight gold, but a short-notice rematch later that year ended in a devastating head-kick knockout.

Gaethje captured the undisputed lightweight championship by defeating Renato Moicano at the historic White House card on June 14, 2026. Like Volkanovski, the 37-year-old has openly discussed the physical toll of competing at the sport’s highest level and suggested his career is nearing its conclusion.

Speaking on the “Who Da Fook Are These Guys?” podcast, Volkanovski argued that pairing their respective exits makes logistical and promotional sense. He suggested bypassing standard rematches in favor of a super fight with the 155-pound belt on the line, allowing both divisions to reset immediately afterward without lingering questions about when either champion plans to step away.

Securing that opportunity requires Volkanovski to first navigate an immediate threat. He faces undefeated contender Movsar Evloev in the main event of UFC 333 next week. Evloev’s elite wrestling and unbeaten record present one of the most complex stylistic puzzles in the featherweight division, making the bout a mandatory prerequisite before any cross-divisional negotiations can advance.

Even if Volkanovski retains his belt, the lightweight queue presents significant roadblocks. The 155-pound roster currently features multiple high-profile contenders with strong claims to the next title shot. Arman Tsarukyan recently strengthened his position with a knockout victory over Mauricio Ruffy, ending a prolonged wait for championship contention. Former champion Charles Oliveira continues to generate massive viewership while holding the symbolic BMF title. Paddy Pimblett remains a major commercial draw, and a potential rematch between Gaethje and former featherweight king Ilia Topuria carries substantial crossover appeal.

Historically, the UFC has been selective about granting champions opportunities to hold belts in multiple weight classes simultaneously. Only seven fighters—Conor McGregor, Georges St-Pierre, B.J. Penn, Randy Couture, Amanda Nunes, Daniel Cormier, and Henry Cejudo—have achieved the feat in the promotion’s history. Matchmakers typically prioritize natural contenders or rivalries that guarantee maximum pay-per-view penetration over legacy-building exercises for aging champions.

Gaethje has not publicly responded to Volkanovski’s pitch. The UFC matchmaking team, led by Sean Shelby, has yet to indicate whether a cross-divisional super fight factors into their booking plans for late 2026.

UFC 333 takes place next week, with Volkanovski defending his featherweight championship against Evloev.
