Hull City Can Rewrite Premier League History at Chelsea

Hull City arrives at Stamford Bridge with seven points from its opening three league matches and an unblemished defensive record, despite preseason predictions of relegation. A shutout against Chelsea would make the Tigers the first newly promoted side in Premier League history to keep clean sheets in each of their first four games of a league campaign. It would also make Hull the first top-flight club overall to achieve that feat since Manchester City in the 2015–16 season.

The match is scheduled for Saturday at 15:00 BST (10:00 a.m. Eastern / 07:00 a.m. Pacific). It will not be broadcast live in the United Kingdom because of traditional Saturday afternoon blackout regulations, although international Premier League broadcast partners will distribute it globally.

Hull has spent 26.5% of its opposition build-up time in a low block, with only Newcastle United higher in the Premier League at 28%. Veteran forward Oli McBurnie has led the defensive effort from the front and is scheduled to make his 100th career Premier League appearance. His 258 high-intensity pressures across Hull’s opening fixtures are 74 more than those of any other player in the division.

Hull’s route back to the top flight began with a successful postseason campaign in May. The club secured a key 1-0 away victory against Millwall in the Championship play-off semifinals on May 11, then earned promotion by defeating Middlesbrough at Wembley Stadium on May 23. Before the current league run, Hull had managed only one victory in six league away games, a 2-1 win at Coventry City on August 29, alongside two draws and three losses.

The Tigers drew at Stoke City and suffered a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland to exit the EFL Cup, while their league form has remained undefeated. Chelsea, meanwhile, has confirmed a squad that combines potent attacking play with severe defensive vulnerabilities under manager Xabi Alonso.

The Blues lost their first league match of the season last weekend, going down 2-1 to Arsenal, then responded with a 6-3 victory over Leeds United in the EFL Cup. Chelsea has now failed to keep a clean sheet in 19 consecutive Premier League fixtures. That is the club’s longest run without a shutout since a 31-game stretch between November 1960 and August 1961, and it is just short of the 22-game streak recorded between April and November 1953.

Chelsea’s starts have nevertheless been unusually quick. If the Blues score within the opening five minutes on Saturday, they will become only the second club in Premier League history to score inside five minutes in four consecutive games, matching Brentford’s mark from September and October 2024. A victory would also give Chelsea three consecutive Premier League home wins at Stamford Bridge for the first time since the closing three home matches of the 2024–25 season.

Stamford Bridge has historically been difficult territory for Hull City. The Tigers have never won a league match at Chelsea in 18 visits (D3 L15), the most away games Hull has played against any opponent in the top four divisions of English football without a victory. Chelsea is unbeaten in all 10 of its Premier League meetings with Hull (W8 D2), behind only its 14-game unbeaten streak against Portsmouth for the club’s longest undefeated record against a single opponent in the competition.

Chelsea has also struggled at home against newly promoted teams in recent months. The West London club has failed to win any of its last four Premier League home matches against promoted opposition (D3 L1). A failure to beat Hull would be only the second time in Chelsea’s history that the club has gone five home league games without a win against promoted teams, matching a sequence from April 1947 to September 1948.
