Chelsea Beat Liverpool to £43m Atalanta Full-Back Marco Palestra

Chelsea has completed the acquisition of Italian defender Marco Palestra from Serie A side Atalanta for approximately £43 million ($56 million), landing one of European football’s rising full-back talents after Premier League rival Liverpool withdrew from contention.

Palestra, 21, enters the Premier League after a breakout campaign on loan with Serie A club Cagliari. During his time in Sardinia, the versatile defender made 37 Serie A appearances, registering five goal contributions and helping the team record six clean sheets.

Liverpool had explored signing Palestra during the summer transfer window to address an ongoing vacancy on the right side of its defense. The shortage emerged after England international right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold left for Spanish giant Real Madrid.

After Alexander-Arnold’s departure, Liverpool signed Dutch defender Jeremie Frimpong last year following his Bundesliga title-winning campaign with Bayer Leverkusen. Frimpong has struggled to adapt to the physical demands and tactical pace of the Premier League.

Head coach Andoni Iraola’s side ultimately opted against making a formal bid for Palestra, choosing to reallocate available funds toward restructuring its wide attacking options following the departure of Mohamed Salah. Liverpool also failed to generate the expected capital through player departures before the deadline.

That financial pressure left Liverpool unable to match the spending required for Palestra. The club instead secured Uruguayan center-back Ronald Araújo on loan from FC Barcelona as temporary defensive cover, with the primarily central defender offering emergency versatility at right-back.

Liverpool’s options have been further limited by persistent health issues surrounding Northern Ireland international Conor Bradley, who has been sidelined with an injury for several months. Similar positional problems arose during the previous campaign, when former manager Arne Slot used Hungarian international Dominik Szoboszlai and midfielder Curtis Jones as emergency right-sided defenders.

Jones completed a permanent transfer to Italian club Inter Milan this summer, reducing that interim coverage. Palestra, meanwhile, was developed in Atalanta’s youth academy in Bergamo, a program recognized for producing high-caliber wing-backs under manager Gian Piero Gasperini.

The right-footed defender can operate as a traditional right-back or right wing-back and provides a secondary option on the left flank. Technical evaluations highlight his aerial presence, ability to progress the ball from deep positions, delivery from wide areas, and defensive work rate.

While Chelsea integrates Palestra into its squad, Liverpool returns its focus to domestic and European competition. Following a 2-1 victory over Atlético Madrid in their UEFA Champions League group stage opener, Liverpool is scheduled to face Fulham in Premier League play this weekend.
