Chelsea’s Midfield Crisis Tests Xabi Alonso Against Hull

Alonso must find a stable midfield formula as injuries leave Chelsea short-handed

LONDON — Xabi Alonso must manage Chelsea’s depleted midfield and adapt his tactics when Hull City visits on Saturday. Moises Caicedo is the latest major concern after suffering a recurrence of a calf injury.

The Ecuador international had returned during Chelsea’s recent match against Brighton, but lasted only 14 minutes before being forced off. Alonso ruled Caicedo out of the Hull fixture and declined to give a firm date for his return. “Let’s see for Brentford,” Alonso said when asked whether Caicedo could be available for the following week’s match.

Chelsea’s summer signings have also yet to contribute competitively. Jordan Henderson remains unavailable while recovering from a broken wrist, and defender Marco Palestra is still returning from a training injury sustained on the eve of the campaign.

Striker Emmanuel Emegha is sidelined with a hamstring strain suffered during a closed-doors pre-season friendly against Bromley. As a result, Henderson, Palestra, and Emegha are all still waiting to make their competitive debuts for Chelsea.

The shortage of available players has limited Alonso’s tactical options. In Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Leeds, he rotated heavily and used Malo Gusto on the right side of a three-man midfield. Valentin Barco made his first Chelsea start on the left, while 16-year-old academy product Reggie Watson operated as the sole defensive anchor.

Leeds quickly took advantage of Chelsea’s weakened midfield control and established a 2-0 lead. Alonso abandoned the experiment at halftime, bringing on captain Reece James to restore defensive stability, along with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers.

Palmer scored twice after the changes, and Rogers supplied four assists as Chelsea overturned the deficit and secured a comeback victory. The result also left Alonso facing the difference between his starting core and the available depth options.

Against Hull City, Chelsea must maintain midfield control without relying on unstable tactical experiments. Caicedo, Henderson, Palestra, and Emegha remain unavailable, while the coaching staff seeks a reliable formula to avoid the slow starts that have affected the team’s recent outings.
