Apple Prepares Comprehensive Mac Lineup Overhaul Driven by On-Device AI Demand
Apple is initiating a comprehensive, multi-year update across its Mac computer catalog beginning this autumn and continuing through 2027, driven largely by growing user demand for machines capable of executing complex artificial intelligence agents locally. According to reporting by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the rollout will commence with an entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by a new M6 chip alongside an updated all-in-one iMac desktop.
Both initial devices have completed hardware development and are scheduled for release during Apple’s traditional autumn launch window in October or November. The push reflects a broader industry shift toward on-device AI computing, where integrated Neural Engines and unified memory architectures allow computers to process large language models and automated workflows without relying entirely on remote cloud servers. The incoming iMac represents the desktop line’s first refresh since 2024, when Apple introduced M4 variants with eight- and ten-core CPU configurations. The new desktop model will be offered in two performance tiers, though specific silicon assignments between the M5 and M6 chips remain under evaluation.
Following the initial autumn releases, Apple plans to introduce redesigned high-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops equipped with touch-enabled OLED displays. Internal testing is already underway on these flagship notebooks using M5 Pro and M5 Max processors running macOS 27.1. If launched in late 2026 or early 2027 as targeted, the incorporation of touchscreens would mark a historic reversal of Apple’s long-standing design philosophy, which historically favored trackpad navigation over direct screen interaction for desktop operating systems—a strategic realignment tracked closely by industry analysts at Bloomberg.

Succeeding generations of the flagship Pro line featuring M7 Pro and M7 Max silicon are already in preliminary development for late 2027 or early 2028. Meanwhile, Apple’s entry-level portable segment will see further adjustments. The budget-oriented MacBook Neo, which achieved substantial commercial traction, is slated for a future iteration featuring an A19 Pro processor and expanded memory capacity. Additionally, an M7 variant of the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro is targeted for 2027, adopting the exterior design language of the higher-end models.
Apple’s broader roadmap also accounts for updates across the rest of its personal computing portfolio. The popular 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air lines are slated for standard specification upgrades in 2027 before transitioning to OLED displays in 2028. Desktop form factors, including the Mac mini and Mac Studio, remain secondary priorities in the current schedule; planned revisions include M5 Pro and M6 chip options for the Mac mini, alongside M5 Max and M5 Ultra updates for the Mac Studio. A dedicated OLED iMac remains under long-term development for subsequent product cycles.
