Kioxia Unveils PCIe 6.0 SSDs Designed to Relieve AI Memory Bottlenecks
The new GP1 Series reaches 10 million IOPS to provide a cost-effective memory expansion tier for AI accelerators.
Kioxia Corp. has introduced a new enterprise solid-state drive line designed to bypass data bottlenecks in artificial intelligence workloads, offering hyperscale data center operators a lower-cost alternative to expanding high-bandwidth memory attached directly to processors.
The Japanese chipmaker’s new GP1 Series utilizes the PCIe 6.0 interface and NVMe 2.2 protocol to deliver up to 10 million input/output operations per second (IOPS). Built with Kioxia’s second-generation XL-FLASH memory, the drives allow enterprise AI accelerators to quickly access datasets stored on flash memory over the PCIe interface, reducing reliance on expensive high-bandwidth memory (HBM) soldered onto accelerator boards.
Generative AI models and large language tools face a persistent data bandwidth challenge, commonly referred to as the memory wall. While computational power for AI hardware has expanded exponentially, data processing remains constrained by standard storage interfaces and limited VRAM bandwidth.
Neville Ichhaporia, senior vice president and general manager of the SSD unit at Kioxia America, said XL-FLASH memory delivers high-performance, low-latency operation that functions as an effective memory extension tier for server GPUs. Ichhaporia noted that the technology offers a significantly lower cost per gigabyte than HBM or DRAM-based memory expansions, providing a cost advantage for hyperscalers expanding infrastructure during the current AI boom.
Optimized for 512-byte block sizes compared to traditional TLC memory chips, the GP1 Super High IOPS SSDs offer endurance ratings up to 50 drive writes per day. Kioxia is releasing the series in E3.S and E1.S form factors in 9.5mm and 15mm profiles. Cold-plate liquid cooling options will be available for the E3.S and E1.S 9.5mm models alongside traditional air-cooling setups.
Kioxia is also developing future generations of XL-FLASH memory aimed at pushing throughput rates to 100 million IOPS.
The announcement comes as chipmakers search for strategies to overcome hardware memory constraints in enterprise AI systems. Rivals Sandisk and SK Hynix are developing High Bandwidth Flash memory solutions to address similar data transfer limits. Alongside its GP1 release, Kioxia continues to expand its broader storage lineup, which includes 245TB LC9 enterprise SSDs and the QLC NAND-based EG7 Series for budget client PCs.
