Suno Rolls Out Audio Watermarks and Download Caps to Fight AI Music Fraud
The AI music creation platform is adopting new fingerprinting guardrails following court rulings and record label pushback against synthetic tracks.
Artificial intelligence music generator Suno is deploying audio watermarking technology and restricting song downloads, moving to curb automated mass distribution and address fraud amid mounting legal and industry resistance.
Suno co-founder and Chief Executive Mikey Shulman detailed the rollout of new “transparency tools” in a blog post, stating the platform will integrate audio watermarking and fingerprinting to trace tracks generated on Suno when they appear on external services. The company is also instituting download limits to hinder the bulk export of synthetic tracks onto commercial streaming providers.
The technical restrictions follow rising pressure from major record labels, including Sony Music, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group, which have called for automated AI tracks to be disqualified from official music charts.
To police uploads, Suno is integrating detection tools from third-party media recognition companies Audible Magic and Musixmatch to screen submitted audio files and lyric prompts for potential misuse.
The security update arrives amidst ongoing intellectual property litigation across international courts. A Munich regional court ruled against Suno in a lawsuit brought by German performance rights organization Gema, finding that the company illegally trained its AI models on copyrighted musical works without obtaining appropriate licenses. Suno disputed the decision and indicated it may appeal.
While Warner Music Group reached a licensing deal with Suno last November—settling its litigation to permit the platform to license WMG artists’ music and likenesses—Suno continues to face broader industry claims over training data. Suno stated that its prompt system actively blocks artist names and copyrighted songs from metadata, leaving final decisions on AI labelling to individual artists and streaming platforms.
